If he wasn't made of glass you'd have to factor Nishikori for next year's RG too but he is, so we won't.

I'm surprised at your certainty. Had Novak been a little more off his game or his resolve less strong at the US OPEN Roger could have taken it. And if someone OTHER than Novak is on the other side of the net---absolutely. If Cilic and Wawrinka can win slams recently, so can Roger!

You're absolutely right. Kieran is just grumpy that Roger probably has better chances of winning another Slam than Rafa does.

Was gonna say something similar but didn't bother and you beat me to it :p It's a case of ministry of the bleeding obvious really the way I see it. The guy making slam finals has more chance of winning slams. Duh.

Oh lads, don't let your Fedfan badge get in the way of reason. His best shots are Wimbo and the USO? Next year he'll be 35! It's ridiculous to say he can win them. I know he makes Daveed Ferrer look like a creaking old fogey, but still, it's unlikely his wonderfully conditioned 35 year old self will be better again than his 34 year old. :dodgy:

Oz and the FO? he's a better shot in oz, but last season he played 83 matches - or 85? - then swung down to India to play in the junket before turning up in oz and having his worst result ever there. Guess what? Filthy lucre heads into the Swiss bank again this year. I don't know why, but players are signing up, which is bound to hamstring their Oz effort.

Now, that's a slightly longer answer than "Nope" but, well, Nope!

Even I said no I don't think he will but the thread says can he. Of course he can but he probably won't. To say he can't though is delusional when he's just been in two straight slam finals.

Yeah but technically speaking I can win a slam title. There are possible scenarios, if we want to get silly about it (one being, I meet you in the final :snicker )...

We'd both have to be to meet in a slam final... :laydownlaughing

Btw, there are other other silly scenarios like denying that he can win one when he makes two straight finals. Any other opponent in those 2 last finals and the title was his imo. His game is off when he plays Novak in the last 3 slams and while I clearly give credit to Novak and his great ROS there are plenty of examples of just sloppy play that he doesn't exhibit versus others besides Nadal (and he's not making any finals so...).

This isn't really a great argument to make because those finals were in the past, and in very favourable tournaments. And he still didn't win them. He's going to be 35 next year. he's actually won 100 matches more than a lad like Ferrer has played. That's more than a long season. He has huge miles on the clock. You really think the game will be so poor next year that a 35 year old will win a slam?

Can he win one? I can too.

Will he?

Nope...

Well the game was so "poor" this year a 34 year old made 2 straight slam finals. Or maybe it's 'cos this 34 year old is still playing very well till the finals. I don't see too many massive threats to the tennis throne on the horizon for next year.

I think the 34 year old is quite extraordinary in his youthful sharpness, reflexes, etc, and he's brought a new level to old fogeys on the tour.

But next year he'll be even older. And nobody knows who's going to suddenly spurt outta the bushes next season...

As I said, I personally don't think he'll win another one but really, a few of those 23 break points converted in the USO final and it was a whole different match. It really doesn't take much. The margins are very small even when Roger plays far below his best.

Luthi has announced recently that the coaching team is planning on evolving Roger's game further. In particular, he mentioned Roger can certainly improve his net play. Actually, with innovations such as SABR and his overall game becoming more aggressive, he always has a chance (perhaps better than any time since 2011).

This I want to see. I'm interested in what more he can do. However his game evolves, he still needs some mental strengthening and reinforced confidence to play the big (critical) points a little better.

I've been saying for years he had to do just "this!" He isn't going to take out Nole from the baseline! He has to attack as he does on faster surfaces like Dubai and Cincy! It only makes sense; esp. after all those break points missed out on at the USO! :cover :nono  :dodgy:

He is indeed coming to the net more often since Edberg came on board. However, his execution at the net is not as good as it could be. That is what Luthi is talking about. Improving Fed's net play is one of the big items in prepping Roger.
