He's been run over by the newbies a lot the past few years and none of them are any good. 2 losses to Milos, lost to Kyrgios, etc. He had nothing on his shots today and the backhand badly misfired.

At least it's not as embarrassing as the loss to Hewitt in 2014 but even then he made the SF of the Australian Open right after that loss. Lingering flu symptoms slowed him down and he played 4 consecutive days, including a tricky enough 3 setter against Dimitrov. I'd be a lot more concerned if he lost to snouty at the AO but he'll come in rested and a lot sharper than this no doubt. A sharper Federer would not lose to Raonic when he served 6 double faults. Still, in a way I'm kind of glad Raonic is back in the mix to make things interesting as maybe he'll trouble one of the other top guys. Didn't get up in time to watch this one as I went to bed dead late but I read Raonic took a very long medical timeout right after Federer held serve. Having to put up with waiting, cooling down and losing your rhythm and then having to face more bullets flying your way against a big server the minute things resume probably didn't help one bit. Nothing really to be too concerned about here. And lastly as much as I'd have preferred Roger started the season with a title if only a small one, it's good to see Raonic start on a positive vibe after the injury troubles he had last year so good for him.

Yeah I read about the flu-like symptoms just after the match. Either way not too encouraging. Milos and his kind is always someone Roger should be swatting away with ease. This was one of the (now) rare matches where Roger struggled badly with his backhand. Hopefully a week off will do him good.

Congrats to Raonic, now it's my turn to be very glad of that win.....someones should think a little more about KARMA and wait....:clap

You can type about how glad you are right now but I'm betting you saw a lot of "6-1 6-2" in your nightmares last night :clap

No one cares too much about karma here, Carol. This wasn't the 9th loss in 10 to Raonic for Federer, he doesn't now have a losing head to head against him, he won 8 games instead of 3. The list is endless. I've no problem with Raonic winning. Guy had a tough year last year with injuries so good for him to start off the year with a title. You can clap properly if he beats Federer at a slam but I wouldn't be holding your breath on that one. Plus, and this is the best part: Federer can actually beat Djokovic. Go dwell on that one for a while.

The MTO affected Milos equally, at least. He came back and served 3 DF in a row, offering 3BP to Roger on a silver plate. But he was not able to convert them...sounds familiar?

Sure does, Roger is the king of poor break point conversion :cry

His break point conversion against Wafa is woeful as well.

from tennis.com:

"Federer also added that Raonic, who defeated him in the Brisbane final 6-4, 6-4, has improved significantly and has more than just one of the biggest serves in the game.

"I just think his consistent power is something that's so impressive. The focus he brings to every single serve," the 17-time Grand Slam champion said. "I've always said it's amazing that he can do that. For a big guy he moves well. He's improved his fitness the last few years. Also, tactically I think he's better now than he's ever been. He's made a conscious effort of playing close to the baseline… It's a great start for him. I'm very happy for him."

At his best, it was understandable! I watched a few points of '09 Aussie final where Roger was using every trick in the book just to stay in the match! It was a miracle it went 5; both were hitting great shots and running each other ragged! For obvious reasons, Roger wasn't going to win many of those after 2007 over Rafa! :cover :puzzled :nono  - I still hope Roger bought something nice for Robin for doing what he couldn't; even in his prime at RG! :snicker :p

He had a lot of very tough matches at RG 2009 so I don't think he needs to thank anyone but himself for winning it.

I wouldn't say "a lot!" Who's fault was it that Roger spotted Haas a 2 set lead early? Del Po, we didn't know yet; a preview of his USO win later in the year also took Roger to 5 in the semi! I missed those matches for some reason; probably didn't like Rafa's dominance there! I can't ever remember waking up for Rafa's act on court! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
