The thing that kinda strikes me as unfair though is this was his only refused/missed test in the required period and you're allowed more than one missed/refused so they overstepped the line in punishing him as much as he did by not complying.

I doubt you're allowed to refuse a test. It's easy enough to get locked in your own mansion and miss a test through evasion, but refusing to take one would be like an admission of guilt...

RE: Viktor Troicki banned for 18 months

Really really stupid by Troicki. After all that talk (during that period) on getting more tests and more serious about (blood) doping he should have known that the ITF were not going to give him the benefit of the doubt. 18 months is not harsh though. There needs to be a clear message that if you fool around, it will have severe consequences. In the case of Troicki its probably the loss of around 1 to 2 million dollars worth of prize money that he could have gathered, and the fact that he cannot compete in the prime of his career.

He'll probably appeal and we'll see how much of a case he actually has.

Now that it is confirmed he refused the test, and he gave no reason why he refused it this ban does not seem harsh. It is one thing if through a series of circumstances you miss a test, but he refused to take it!

Agreed. Yup. Clearly he had something to hide. In that case I'd question the dosage of what he was taking! Wasn't working well enough!

Further on this, from the ITF, via Tennis.com:

Mr. Troicki provided a urine sample, but did not provide a blood sample. He asserted to an independent tribunal that he was assured by the Doping Control Officer (DCO) that it would be acceptable not to provide a sample on account of him feeling unwell that day. However, the tribunal concluded that the DCO told Mr Troicki that she could not advise him as to whether his reason for not providing a blood sample was valid, and that no such assurances were given by her.

It starts to look like he was winging his defence...

^ I'm not sure I found it hilarious, but I did find it dramatic, which I liked very much. Great job!

And thanks, Baron BB for clarifying the rule/difference for me between missing a test and refusing one. I also agree with those that say that, with so much attention now on doping, and so much conversation about cracking down, it does seem stupid, at the very least, to risk non-compliance, knowing the consequences, as he must, surely.

Yes, but the article said it contained other things, and a warning label. Aren't OTC cold medicines a concern for athletes, because of the "ephedrines" contained?

Yeah in fairness lots of things can make you test positive and I obviously didn't read it 100% first time :) Getting late! Well, he's got quite a high ranking at the moment so if he gets a ban that'll be bigger news than Troicki.

Again, perhaps all of this calls for the "passport," which I don't completely understand, but it is supposed to keep a coherent log of athletes levels over time, and be a better indicator of "peaks and troughs."

Yeah, but you're assuming Team Cilic are telling the truth. It's probably as likely a story as Alberto Contador eating a contaminated steak. If you look at the excuses made by dopers most of the boil down to one of the following three:

a) Asthma medication
b) Medication for a cold
c) Badly labelled over the counter supplements.

I doubt the story.

True. All totally lame excuses and they're likely all 100% guilty. Contador's steak was the most hilarious in recent memory.

So let's see, you test positive you get only a 3 month suspension and you refuse a test and get 18 months?! What drugs are the ITF themselves on with that logic? That's utterly ridiculous and Viktor ought to sue them.

Yeah saw that. And how completely insane are they to give him 3 months for actually failing a drug test and giving Troicki 18 months for refusing to give blood? Absolute morons in control. Reminds me of the "management" clowns in my office. Couldn't manage an orgy in a brothel. Same with the ITF.

So inexplicable withdrawals .....and retirements... could be juicy. There were a ton of withdrawals at Wimbledon this year.

Well since they kept that quiet maybe some people will now not only see but believe that silent bans aren't just an internet forum myth.

It's not very quiet after all as we're talking about it.
