silly, RG existed before tennis was played on hardcourts......

Nadal is a silly boy as well, it makes no sense to change the surface at this time of the year. They should change the name though, as WTF doesn't represent the entire tour but the last part of the season.

Perhaps, it could be change to a venue where outdoors hards could be use.....South America? Anyways, Nadal makes me puke with his constant "victim" mentality......nobody ever force him to play so many HC events yet he complains about them.

' "But that doesn't mean the ATP cannot be a little bit more fair to all the players. We qualify on all the surfaces, so it would be great to change the surface every year."

Nadal knows he is unlikely to benefit from such a change, but he's doing it for his children - or for the next generation, as he prefers to put it. '

Fair to all the players? How about changing RG to hard court?

Future generations is also lol worthy. He should talk about it after he retires then.

It's right, he's not going to benefit from a change, so why shouldn't he say it now?

Make RG a HC slam? That'd give others a shot alright!
:Lolz:

Thats why his comments are silly and completely selfserving. He is obviously hoping that they will change it before he retires and that they move to clay courts in South America or something.

I think we could lose one of the North American hardcourt MS. There are 4 of them (out of 9)! Lose Miami, or IW.

And yes we need a grass masters.

The thread is derailing already and we don't need Nadal2005rg for us to do it :)

Or Mastoor. ;)

Totally agree about the US hards.

Anyway, gonna be interesting to see how Rafa gets on. This seems a slower surface than he's been on since Flushing Meadows. I hope to see him attack with gusto and get it done swiftly.

I hope - but....

Do you give Ferrer a fighting chance? I mean, it's put up or shut up for Rafa and he can't set aside a tired Ferrer aside then what can he do against Novak? This match wll tell us all we need to know about Rafa.

He's not complaining this year! ;)

I agree about the name change, as I said above.

Predictions for today?

The surface is better for Nadal and Ferrer might start to feel the last three weeks, I'd be really surprised if Ferrer wins. To use a cliché: the first set is crucial. Cant see Ferrer winning it in three.

I pick Rafa in two sets and Novak in three sets.........BUT it wouldn't shock me to see Ferrer push Nadal and Roger take Novak out.

Changing the name would take away a bit of the prestige of the event. Obviously something Nadal and his fans would be in favour of :D

Actually no. If I was sarcastic I would say something like 'obviously something Federer and his fans would be in favour of'.

Anyway, apparently Novak has said that Federer has lost some of his movement e.g. is getting old. That will add some spice to the match tonight. :)

I wonder if Nole or Ferrer will show a hangover from Paris. Though Roger has played a lot in the last two weeks. I'll go for Rafa and Novak, and both in straights...

I don't fully agree with Nadal, but this is flawed logic. Changing RG to hard would mean no slams are played on clay. How would that be fair to all players when many players excel on clay? The ones who excel on hards and grass have their slams, so I don't see how changing RG to hards would promote fairness.

I realize you're not serious with your suggestion, but I'm not following the point you're trying to make.

Anyway, making the WTF a clay court tournament, even for a couple of years, would be odd and somewhat nonsensical, as all the tournaments leading up to it are played on fast hards/indoors. It only makes sense that it's played on that kind of surface. It's the same logic behind playing Masters 1000 events on clay before a major on clay, playing a grass court tournament before a major on grass, and Masters 1000 events on hards before a major on hards.

Indoor tennis is dying as it is, we don't have to bury it further. Diversity is good. I'm all for changing the venue every now and then. But the surface should stay similar. It would MAYBE be fine if it's played on an outdoor fast hard court, but a bigger change than that would be too extreme.

It wasn't a serious comment indeed and therefore I didn't really think it through. The thought was something like if we change RG to hardcourts, players other than Rafa would be in a better position to win the event.

I am a big fan of clay court tennis so changing RG surface is the last thing I would like to see.

I agree - we should have a proper indoor season, but the tournament name should possibly change.

Also, add a few more indoor events, just like they'll hopefully upgrade a few grass court events when Wimbledon moves back. We don't need 3 clay MS events. Make Queens a grass MS event and force Shanghai to go indoors (if we're to persevere with China), to add balance to the year...

Why should the name change? It's not like the French Open is named the Clay Open. I know what you mean, since the WTF is supposed to be the World Tour Finals, but you have to assign a surface. So if it's played on grass, should it be called World Grass Court Championship?

But the problem is that it IS indoor season. What sense does it make to play a bunch of tournaments indoors or on fast outdoor hardcourts and then suddenly play on clay or grass the very last week. The tournament has to be played on some surface so might as well not do a total 180 for just the last week which would undoubtedly cause a pretty poor show.

They play a bunch of tournaments on clay, then switch to grass the week after RG (Halle, Queen's Club), then play Wimbledon. In that case, it's considered to be a great challenge to make the adjustment and win both, hence its rarity. Why would this be different?

I'm totally fine with changing RG to hards if we change the AO to clay. It's the only GS Nadal has only won once. A few more times wouldn't hurt his legacy :)
