The commentator talking about Wang's former coach, Peter McNamara who passed away from prostate cancer last year in July. He'd be proud. Great day for Wang.

Always hate to see Serena lose. But when it comes against someone who played like that, it's a little easier. Obviously she is still to blame for a lot of it. But so much credit to Wang. Great play today from her. Close match. Serena has won a lot of close matches in her career. Just by the law of averages, you can win them all. She'll take off her customary February and we'll see her in March in IW and Miami, barring injury.

While I never relish Serena being gone, once she is, I can focus on other players. And with Sloane Stephens continuing her truly terrible run of form, I can be all for Osaka, Bencic or Kvitova (the feel good player; would still love to see her win one after the robbery and hand surgery.)

We'll see how the draw falls apart though. Or doesn't. Maybe Barty becomes the first Aussie to win this thing in a LONG time. Doubt it. But we'll see.

Man, I really want to watch some of Osaka v. Gauff. Shall I take a nap now, or watch a bit of Djokovic?

Looking at the bottom of the draw.... all I can see is how it can completely break down. Not Osaka/Barty's half. Pliskova/Halep's half. Mostly from Pliskova. I guess because I still don't believe in Pliskova. I can totally see her losing to Pavlyuchenkova. Or Kerber. Probably not Giorgi. But maybe.

Diyas can beat Bertens. I've been waiting on Diyas to do better for a couple years now. Then again. I've been thinking Zidansek may have more in her too and Serena dispatched her fairly simply.

Muguruza can beat Svitolina. Muguruza could win the whole thing if she's put the last two seasons behind her. She's looked fairly good so far this year.

Halep less likely to lose it I think. But if Bellis upsets Mertens, Halep is officially on notice. Putintseva of course is a bit of an upset specialist herself.

Bencic is no guarantee over Kontaveit. And maybe young Swiatek is more ready to win now and can trouble Vekic.

But, the point is, the WTA has SO much depth now. A large number of players who can't sustain a top 30 ranking can beat anyone in the top 10 on any given day. We've seen every single one of the these top 10 players and current slam champions show that they can lose out of the blue to a "nobody." Though of course, if you pay close enough attention to the WTA, there are very few nobodies anymore. Because they've all got a good win here or good run there.

Anyways. I'm sure now that I've said this the bottom half will play out to the seeds and the top half will crumble. I mean. Lord knows Kvitova can lose a match on any given day. Jabeur and Wang have already blown up the bottom half of Osaka's quarter.

Riske trying to hang in there to get back to Barty at a slam. Though I don't think it would go her way this time. Keys working on a comeback. But Sakkari just broke her again to get back on serve.

I definitely taking one. I didn't get my nap the last 2 nights, but I'm taking one now. A good 2.5 if I go now. So going now. :sleep2:
