Serena is such a force of nature I think she might create her own weather system. She is amazing.

HAHAHA.;..I LOOOOVE that -- HER OWN WEATHER SYSTEM

HEHE...

did you notice -- of course you did -- her SECOND serves?
oh my god!!

her FIRST serves weren't quite as ''often" in being what they are famous for...

but to ''compensate" SECOND serves were FIRST SERVES -- so

miss the first serves? no problem -- just hit a second FIRST serve. even HARDER.

lol

Lucic-Baroni has strapping on her left thigh and calf, maybe she had to have a restrapping, she has a love hold.Lucic Baroni breaks Pliskova to love and will serve for the match 5-4.

did you all know the ''back -story" of mirjana -- apart from the well-known one of her abusive dad (to the whole family - they said) - and of course her falling off the tour and that sh'es a married woman now making some comeback?

it is this:

back when she was in those times with the dad -- and that very time she first made a splash in this AO --

there was this top player - who told some people

"she's such a talented player - she could be among the best ".
tht was steffi graf.

then shortly it became known - that father abusing..
in some way -- graf was able to contact mirjana - maybe through intermediary..since it was becoming evident that mirjana probably wanted to run away ...

graf was the one that offered to have them fly and bought them - she , her mom, sisters -- plane tickets -- and have things somehow arranged for them to finally escape .

the main thing being simply to NOT be beaten up - whatever else happens or their decisions in their lives.

that's how they originally landed in florida.

and years ago when we began to see mirjana trying to make a come-back again -- it was also graf that encouraged her - getting her to hit together...that kind of thing, just basically BE IN the playing mode.

nice, huh?

in those years when it was more known that graf had done some of those things she was asked by a writer...

where graf was also partly responsible for getting jennifer capriati BACK to the game (and still to win her AO and FO, mind you) ..

''why would you do those things? go out of your way?"
and steffi answered:

"with those that are so alone -- i just coulndt help but try and do something".

I will have to tape both matches, being Australia Day here I am going out for lunch.

My picks are Coco to defeat Vee....sorry Vee,unless she has a melt down which to date she hasnt, she is also riding on huge confidence.

Serena to defeat Lucic-Baroni,impressed by Serena's last match against Konta,Serena will not be passive like Pliskova.

Happy Straya Day... we passed our citizenship tests yesterday :)

Yep, I'll follow with CoCo and Serena prevailing... although I give Venus a better chance than Lucic-Baroni

Amazing to see Mirjana Lucic-Baroni's last meeting with Serena was back in 1998! Nearly two decades ago.

Congratulations to you and the missus, then! ("Straya Day"...I had to think about that for a sec. "You" Aussies are so funny. LOL.) I'm inclined to go with ya'lls picks, though I think everyone is at least sentimentally torn on Vee at least, and likely both. I'm hoping for good matches, and may the best player win.

That is a head-spinning fact. Good on Lucic-Baroni for her comeback from adversity. If Monica Puig was the feel-good story of the summer, MLB is the Cinderella of this winter.

Venus is looking good and holding her own. With @MargaretMcAleer out at lunch celebrating Australia Day, I may be the only one commenting here.

Unless she's gets a major anxiety dip... I think Coco will get a lot more separation in the second.
Yes, and I may have to go for a nap soon, before the men's SF. I think it will be hard from Venus to come back here. And I'm not picturing Serena losing. See you in a few hours for the Live Chat. (I may be dozing on the sofa for the first set.)
