It had to happen! Most Americans are overachieving at the moment & it's to be expected that their runs will stop sooner rather than later!
Which Americans would you say are over-achieving, just to be clear? Fritz losing to Popyrin is a huge upset. #9 defeated by #113? And weren't you the one complaining that Mackie McDonald wasn't going to get the kudos he was due for beating Nadal? So who, amongst the Americans is over-achieving right now, in your estimation. Surely not Brooksby, if you saw that match. He was dictating, and Ruud was woeful. Is that over-achieving? Just curious to know which ones of the Americans you think are getting ahead of themselves.

Mackie MacDonald seems to be suffering an ab injury. Nishioka's a tough out, anyway. Waiting for @Fiero425 to complain that McDonald threw it all at Nadal and now goes out this round. Classic, right?
Nah, the thought he beat Nadal while fighting through a debilitating ab injury sounds a far better narrative to run with ;)

Being "in the zone" and playing well for a few weeks does not make the next great champion! I don't think it'll continue for long as all the top US players are overachieving IMO! Their weapons are few and far between amongst them all even though they've had their share of success defeating Fedalovic these last 2 years! The thing is, they still haven't gotten much out of it outside of personal accolades; nothing really added to a resume like a tournament! So far it's been all about Europe for quite a while! The US is getting some good press, but it's still a little early to proclaim any of these guys the next #1! :astonished-face::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth::face-with-tears-of-joy:

Instead of ranting and blathering on, why don't you just answer the question? Fritz isn't over-achieving, he was upset. Frances Tiafoe is seeded 16, and beat 2 unseeded players. How is that over-achieving? You're tired of about hearing about Fedalovic? Then why bring them in when they're not even part of the question? It's a fairly simple question.

A very poor game from FAA who had 3 MPs against Cerunodlo and could not convert 1 of them
Serves out the match 61 36 61 64 into the round of 16

Why must a player be "the next great champion" or "next #1" to be worthy of consideration? This is my issue with your view, Fiero, that keeps popping up. Every player that isn't a modern day Borg sucks.

This is why I think FAA has another major jump...at least in potential. He still has some dangling parts to iron out...in a way, it is like a young Federer (2001-02)....you see the parts to be great, but the game-to-game consistency isn't there. Yet.

On the other hand, that's how Grigor Dimitrov kind of looked...and continued to look for his whole career. So FAA reminds me a bit of a Federer-Dimitrov hybrid (with some Novak thrown in), though I expect he'll end up somewhere between the two (probably closer to Grigor, but when the other end of the spectrum is Roger, that could still be very, very good).

Tiafoe lost to silent K, had 6:1 in 4th set TB but it wasn't enough for him to take the match to 5th set.
Shapovalov continues to play subpar and failed to first real test against Hurkacz.

Meanwhile Medvedev is in trouble against Korda, down a set and a break. Weird 1st set, there was 6 breaks of serve and more in TB like in WTA.

Korda is stepping into his place. Beautiful match, beautiful play with a few chokes in the final set. His style of play is fun to watch.
Jim Courier mentioned before this match, he believes that Korda will become the top American player, he said he has a great overall game,. a great result for him today, well done

After this loss from Medvedev, who spent 16 weeks as world No 1 in 2022, will leave the Top Ten after the AO. Projected to be # 12 at best at January 30th.
