The last time Nadal won a hard court slam (2019 US Open) Monfils and Berrettini faced other in the QF and the winner of that match faced Nadal in the SF.

Medvedev was in the other side of the draw too.

Also, both Federer and Djokovic were out before the semifinals.

Meanwhile, fast forward to the 2022 Australian Open, guess what the potential draw looks like once again…eerily similar
I’m so impressed you remember that! And yes, eerily similar, approaching surreal.

I think Mats Wilanda is on some type of medication...saying he loves to watch Rafa and he is such a motivator and a problem solver.....gee just last month he suggested Rafa should retire lol!

I remember Zverev's post match interview after Rd 2 when he said,

"I hope I can hit the ball even hard in R3,harder in R4 and more harder Vs Rafa"

Over confidence in tennis can sometimes by your biggest enemy and today was just a prime example of that.

Well, he's not totally insane! After Novak won his FO in 2016, maybe got to about 12 majors, he thought a new GOAT had come of age! He assured us that Djokovic would overtake Fedal and break just about every record they held! ALL TRUE! :face-with-hand-over-mouth: :sick::popcorn:-)2

Apparently he was off his medication when he said that lol! Matt changes his opinion on players like the wind.

I totally respect on what Matteo Berrettini has done in the last couple of years. Ever since that 2019 US Open SF run, he has improved his fitness and mentality to be a better tennis player. He used that US Open run to gain valuable experience and never looked back. He will always have limitations on his game (backhand and not a good returner), but he knows when to take the opportunity.

I didn't see this post before, but I did notice this morning, looking at the H2Hs of matches after last night's results, the Berrettini d. Monfils (5 sets, btw,) QF USO 2019, so I did think, oh, that must have been the round before Rafa played Matteo, but I didn't think about other coincidences, such as Roger and Novak not being in the tournament anymore, at that point. Since @Ellentonboy cautions us, rightly, not to look ahead, I won't, but there could be more coincidences with that tournament. I will hope so, and leave it there. ;)

I have half-heard something a couple of times in the past week, but never properly. Something about Medvedev trying to be the first man to follow up his first Major win with his 2nd in the very next Major...in the Open Era? Has anyone heard this? Is it in the entire Open Era, or last some number of years? Anyone know?

No I did not mean that, keep it where it is okay,I was frazzled enough just watching it,I dont need to watch it again lol!
Aw Margaret, LOL. I already made the changes. And on second thoughts, tiebreaker deserves it's own thread. I like the fact the tiebreak was battle of the lefties and two 30 plus year olds. Tie-break will go down as one of the greatest ever, i'm sure :)

I checked the Open Era, and it’s true: Medvedev would be the first man to win his first two majors back-to-back.
