Just a little fun fact. Juan Monaco won 8 games yesterday against Nadal which is the same number of games he won in 3 full matches previous to last night. Yesterday 6-4 6-4. Prior to that he lost 6-4 6-1 at this same tournament last year, 6-1 6-0 at the 2014 Madrid masters and 6-2 6-0 6-0 at Roland Garros 2012. Now either his wrist surgery was absolutely miraculous or there must be some other reason :snicker

Yes, just one of many pigeons that Rafa owns "lock, stock, & barrel!" :cover :nono  :dodgy: :p

Thiem through, waiting for Nadal.
I am interested in Dominic's improvement on clay, because I think this is the surface where his best chances are to make a real breaktrough. Playing Nadal will be a good barometer.

No, he won't beat Rafa. You can use the number of games he wins as barometer.

Lorenzi managed 8 games and he is a veteran who lives on the challenger tour, albeit a clay specialist. Thiem would be at least as good, one would think.

An aging baldy bollocks out of form playing a guy just back after 7 months off tour due to wrist surgery, who prior to surgery could barely muster up 2 games in 3 sets at RG in 2012 and 1 game 2 years later at Madrid. Should be a cracking match :snicker

They seem to be good "friends" too :cover

Thiem / Manacor's bull should be good, I wonder if Dom can beat the Spanish king of clay...

It's much better to have a good friend like Monaco than a rogue friend like Tiger Woods.......:nono :cover

Why? Did he lose? :popcorn

'cos he lost focus. He had his best result against him that match.

Straight sets win, buddy, credit where it's due, and all that... ;)

Yeah, he won. Not disputing that, just the he owned him part 'cos he clearly did not.

He beat him in straights. He's never dropped a set against him.

It's kind of indecently unfair, brother, that no matter what Rafa does you criticise him, or denigrate him...

There's nothing indecently unfair about saying a single break in each set is not owning someone. Not my fault you take offense to anything negative said about Rafa. Now, I'll be the first to admit he has in past matches and even indicated as much if you read my post on the previous page where I said it took him 3 matches to win as many games as he did in their last match. Seeing as he won 8 games in one match this time versus 8 games in the previous 3 matches it's 100% fair to say he most definitely did not own him this last match. He won by a whole 2 games and that's not much.

Fiero said Rafa owns Monaco and you said he didn't own him last night. But he did! He continued his run of success against him, unimpeachable in the loss of absolutely no sets. Credit where it's due, brother, come on! Repeat after me: good man, Ralphy! :clap

You clearly don't grasp the definition of "owning" someone versus merely beating someone in a close match. :nono

Ralphy gets to face Thiem in a few minutes. Looking forward to seeing how he does against someone who plays on the baseline instead of 30 feet behind it.

I do! When you beat a bloke in straights every time you play them, you own them! :clap

Likewise and was pleasantly surprised this match is on now and not 5am so will definitely watch it. Monaco plays like Gasquet. So far behind the baseline he might as well be a spectator ffs!

Ralf gets the quick break to go up 2-0. Thiem has a wicked forehand.

edit: And Thiem immediately breaks back. He's punishing Nadal almost every time he sees a short ball.
