Congratulations to Rafael Nadal for winning his 65th title and 46th Clay title (tying Vilas for most in the Open Era).

In addition, with this title, Nadal has now won at least one title for 12 consecutive years.

How he has played? I couldn't seen the match and I read it was raining and they had to fix the court but even that I heard that he did very good shots

He played better in this match than his semifinals match against Berlocq. He started to hit better towards the end of the match but at the same time Monaco started to miss some easy shots.

It's hard to gauge Nadal's level at this point but at the same time he starting to regain his form or momentum on the court.

I would say Indian Wells will tell us more about Nadal's form.

At the very least, he is back in the winning circle for now :D

I just went to the ATP site and it now has Vilas with 49 clay court titles, they must of changed it from yesterday, cause they stated if Rafa won today he would tie with Vilas?

Where did you see this? Can you please provide a link?

I suspect someone made a typo.

Their latest article is here (which doesn't mention the number of clay-court titles):

Thanks so much for that good information, he is playing better and better every match and even that he needs still to find his best level I'm sure he will and soon. Hope he can find it on HC and later to play better than last year on clay where he didn't

You don't want to use IW as the barometer. Rafa will surely not win IW with the current form.
He may even exit at or before QFs.

The real barometer would be to see his form in the clay matches played in the clay season.

Congrats Rafa , even that you are "on decline lol" , you are too slow, you are not play well :cry but you have won your first tournament of the year and I hope to see many more and not precisely just a 250 :clap

Remember, he needs about 16 more matches before RG to fully regain his confidence, IMO.

Thanks. I see what you mean. But wait ... it gets weirder.

If you look at the profile for Vilas, in the section for titles/finals:

http://www.atpworldtour.com/Tennis/Players/Vi/G/Guillermo-Vilas.aspx?t=tf

I counted (twice) the number of clay-court titles, and it's 47.

1983: Kitzbuhel (Outdoor/Clay) , Delray Beach WCT (Outdoor/Clay)

1982: Kitzbuhel (Outdoor/Clay) , Boston (Outdoor/Clay) , Madrid (Outdoor/Clay) , Monte Carlo (Outdoor/Clay) , Buenos Aires (Outdoor/Clay)

1981: Monte Carlo (Outdoor/Clay) , Houston (Outdoor/Clay) , Cairo (Outdoor/Clay) , Mar Del Plata (Outdoor/Clay)

1980: Palermo (Outdoor/Clay) , Kitzbuhel (Outdoor/Clay) , Rome (Outdoor/Clay)

Tented, it seems the original data of 46 that ATP had is wrong and they have corrected themselves.
Here are the three missing titles. Torornto 74, Toronto 76, and Virginia Beach 77.

ATP thought these were on hard. But, they were apparently on clay in the said yeares and
even though those tourneys changed the surface to hard later.

Actually, Indian Wells will be a good barometer on whether or not Nadal's form is back to normal or not. Yes, it is not his beloved Clay but it is still the same court that suits his game very well. In addition, most of the top players will be in this tournament so it will also be a good test to see if his current form can go toe to toe with the big guys.

In my opinion, he doesn't need to win the title, he just need to play better one match at a time.

Actually both players deserve credit for playing on such a poor court,it had to have 2 lots of clay and then had to be rolled in between the rain.

Exactly, nobody is saying that he has or he is going to win but just to see that he is playing better and IW can be a good test

The one thing about Nadal right now is that he doesn't seems tired or stressed out about his level of play. At this point last year, even though his level was better last year, he seemed mentally tired and looked like he was ready to go vacation.

This year, even though his level this year has been sub par, he seems calm and relaxed. He knows it will would take some time to recover his good form especially he is not young anymore.

Let's just hope he can find his physical form sooner rather than later.

In fairness, considering the amount of rain, the court was quite good from the third game onwards. They payed the price for not having a way to cover the court, and considering that they made a miracle to leave it playable. The indoor courts here at São Paulo had more bad bounces in two games than they had in the whole match.

Maybe in future the officials will check the weather forecast and do something to cover the court? usually you can play in light rain on a clay court, though not like it was in its present state.I have never seen at any clay tournament, having to have 2 lots of clay before the players could play on it.
