Don't forget about Novak choking away the 2016 US Open final. He wins that match, the Year End #1 would have been locked.
Did he "choke," it, though? Novak lost in 4, v. Stan, so he could have had another set to play with. Stan was of Novak's bugaboos in Majors. It really bothers me when some say that the top guy "choked" it, when the other guy took it to him. Especially if they don't go the full option of sets. In my memory of that match, Stan played really smart and calm. By then, he knew how to beat Novak, even in the final of a Major, and he did.

I don't see how Charlie would rank below Jannik and Meddi when he won a slam this year and they didn't.
This is one of my problems with things like UTR. They use their own ratings, but they don't necessarily pass the eye test...or the sniff test. Winning a Major gets you one step closer to the Hall of Fame. Passing a guy who won a Major on the UTR rankings...gives you bragging rights to the UTR acolytes, I guess?

Let's see how my Premier Event Points does:

1. Djokovic 53
2. Alcaraz 35
3. Medvedev 27
4. Sinner 21
5. Rublev 13
6-7. Zverev, Tsitsipas 9
8. Rune 8
9-11. Hurkacz, Ruud, Fritz 7

Of course that's pretty much exactly the same as the ATP rankings.

What, you don't have a glossary handy of all of my stats?

It is a system I concocted to assess the overall value of a given season, very similar to the "tournament points" of GOAT Points. Basically:

Grand Slam 10 W, 5 F, 3 SF, 1 QF
TF: 1 per win, +1 for title (max 6)
Masters: 4 W, 2 F, 1 SF
Olympics: 4 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze
ATP 500: 2 W, 1 F
ATP 250: 1 W
Davis Cup: 1 for singles Final win
Slam bonuses: +5 for all four, +2 for 3 Slams, +1 for 2 Slams; +1 for two surfaces, +2 for three surfaces; +1 for all finals (3 or more Slams played)

(So it differs for GOAT Points by giving a bit more weight to Slam wins and Olympic Gold, plus the Slam bonuses).

Basically 10 PEP is a good year for a second tier player; 20 is elite (roughly top 200 of the Open Era), 30 is great (roughly top 100 Open Era), 40 is probably the best in a given year (roughly top 50 Open Era) and the type of season only all-time greats have, 50 is historic and among the top 20 or so best season of the Open Era. There have only been six 60+ seasons (two by Federer, two by Djokovic, 1 each by Laver and McEnroe).

Novak's 53 PEP was the third highest of his career and 13th highest overall in the Open Era. Here are the 50 PEP seasons of the Open Era:

  1. 75 - Djokovic 2015
  2. 71 - Laver 1969
  3. 71 - Federer 2006
  4. 64 - McEnroe 1984
  5. 63 - Djokovic 2011
  6. 59 - Federer 2007
  7. 56 - Nadal 2013
  8. 56 - Nadal 2010
  9. 56 - Federer 2004
  10. 54 - Lendl 1986
  11. 54 - Federer 2005
  12. 54 - Murray 2016
  13. 53 - Djokovic 2023
  14. 52 - Borg 1980
  15. 52 - Nadal 2008
  16. 51 - Djokovic 2016
  17. 50 - Connors 1974
  18. 50 - Djokovic 2012
  19. 50 - Djokovic 2021
Note that this is a pretty simple formula. I have a more complex version that incorporates a "PEP%"--that is, PEP divided by tournaments played, to differentiate players who, for example, accumulated 40 PEP in 25 tournaments vs. 15 tournaments. But I've only calculated it for a handful of players so far. It helps balance eras a bit, and gives a bit more weight to those players who had extraordinary seasons without playing every Slam, for instance.

If you listen to Nick's comments over the past year and half since he was in the SW19 final. I NEVER heard any thoughts or feelings of regrets for loosing that match to Novak. Really it was the opposite, he was just happy to be there but really zero remorse for not giving it his All. I think he is very entertaining to watch but just like Monfils, that's really all he is about.

Well said, and he must be cheap if they’re hiring him as a commentator, because really, who cares what he thinks? We know what he thinks of tennis from his career of tanking and not giving a feck…

Why are Israel allowed compete without any of this bs? Their country have the most bloodthirsty scum government on the planet at present. This neutral flag bs for Russia and Belarus is laughable at this stage. If they didn't have double standards, they'd have no standards...

Dear MM ..it's just my opinion about him as a competitor
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, , and as I am entitled to reply to your post ,? Nick did a good job as a commentator when he was on Tennis Channel recently,, so I think he will do a good job at the AO, I am over Jim Courier, who I usually 'mute'. at the AO.

Please try to be Kind to Ken Doll, you know I have a 'soft spot for him :)
I'm still trying to figure how he got here. There are so many people they can use to call NFL games for ESPN. Why him? He's a college basketball officienado.
