His serving was also atrocious. I'm being honest here and you're not. Great for him and his fans that he won but it wasn't a good match.
Did anybody say this was a great match? I'm not sure what you're trying to do...maybe downgrade the achievement. But, in a sense, the real final was played last Tuesday. Nadal beat the defending champ and world #1 to get this title. Rafa played well today. Maybe Cilic would have made more of a match of it, but I do not think he'd have won. He's not that strong in the big moments, and this is his least good surface. And then some would have complained that Rafa didn't play a real clay-courter in the final.

You can only play who is in front of you, the draw was soo badly lop side at the top, at the Young Greek went out early, that left not a lot of big time players left, I am not trying to down grade them as players, still it was up to anyone to grab the spot in the final.

Rafa is a bad matchup for a player like Rudd who really doesn't have any real weapons to hurt Nadal like Thiem, Novak or Carlos. Just think today , Rafa ONLY had to play his "B" game today. Rafa would have completely destroyed couch drop today in the open roof and sunny conditions.
I'd say that was easily his C game. That was probably his B game against Novak.

Hardly trying to downgrade the achievement when I said great for him and his fans. I said it wasn't a good match. I don't think Cilic would have won either unless he maybe brought that level he showed against Medvedev but he was sure as hell gonna make more of a match of it. My point was it was a crap final to watch and a completely outclassed opponent. Though I'm obviously not a Nadal fan, I've watched plenty of very entertaining matches involving him here but this one was a dud. The women's final was completely one sided drivel too.

I dont think Rafa had his A game against Novak either I would give it a B or B+
In saying that I dont think Novak was playing his best either
Exactly. Both were below their best but given Nadal is the better clay court player, below their best still meant a Nadal win.

Miss Margaret all due respect, a B or B+ game cannot battle Novak in a Qtr of a slam. Just looking at two consecutive games that took 28 mins .I think we look at Rafa's 5set vs FAA or his total dismantling of Novak's game at 2020 as his A game but it's really his A + level..well it's just my opinion and you & your beloved 2nd favorite Irishman see it differently. No worries.

AP, I don't know why your panties are in a twist. Your boy won and didn't even have to bring his A+ game this fortnight to do it. Relax, Relate, Release friend
KELI , They are called boxer briefs or if you are south of the mason Dixon line drawers, I was blessed with too much to wear panties! jajaja ..Let me be clear, Rafa played A+ vs FAA in the 5set and A vs Novak's defense over all during the qtrs. It's my opinion that he can't beat Novak with a Bplus game . RG2021 was a Bplus level of play even with the foot issues and Rafa lost.

As I said, no one would claim it was a good match. Nadal victory lap, more like. But I think Margaret makes the important points above about the draw being SO lop-sided...all the 3 faves were in the top half. And the finalist from last year who WAS in the bottom half went out early. It was getting to be slim-pickings. It's sort of like the 2017 USO where everyone complained that Rafa had Anderson in the final. At least here, Rafa beat Novak to get the cup, and had to go through a lot of Top 10 guys, as @Jelenafan posted. But the set-up was always poor for a great final.

Yup, ShitshisPants clearly did this year. Really made the other side weak.

Next year RG will be very interesting with Nadal 37 and hopefully a healed up Zverev who impressed this year and Alcaraz.

I want to post more insane stats of Nadal at Roland Garros. We all know how dominant Nadal is at RG, but Rafael Nadal at RG on even years is MORE dominant than we think of. Just look at these stats:

In even years at RG (06, 08, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22):

58-0
8 titles (3 of those titles he won, he did not lose a single set. 2 of those titles he lost 1 set)
He won an outstanding 47 straight set matches in 58 matches total (81%)
He lost 10 sets in those 58 matches.
He only played ONE five set match in those 58 matches (FAA, this year, in the 4th round)

These numbers are absurd!
