That’s it. Since 2002, only Roger, Rafa, Novak and Andy have won it. We used to say that Roger only beat weak opposition, and that was largely true, compared to the 80’s and 90’s. He stacked up a huge amount of slams by beating Gonzo, Baggy and Fozzy Bear. But it’s still true! Rafa has won 14 FO’s and Novak is near double digits in Australia.

I think the men’s game would benefit from a couple of huge upsets in the first week, even though above everything I want Rafa to win the cup. But the status quo is wiping everything else out, and it’s going to take a while for tennis to recover from this..
I think the huge upsets are gone now since the Russians ain't gonna be allowed to play. Maybe the Red Baron's bandwagon will grow.

I am still scratching my head with Ruud ranked 3, I mean he hasnt won anything on grass, maybe it is time to bring back the grass seedings for Wimbledon again.I understand his ranking of 3 due to his previous ATP wins, still?

The same thing's happened to me with women's tennis ages ago! After Hingis and Henin retired I lost interest! It looked like the WTA might get my attention back with Osaka and Barty, but one is gone and the other a part time player due to physical or emotional reasons! I don't know so many of these players! The rankings have been all over the place with injuries and inconsistent results! Not sure how much I'll care after Novak retires even if I'm not that big a fan! Alcaraz might be the new blood to get me interested in tennis later, but we'll see! :astonished-face: :fearful-face::anxious-face-with-sweat::face-vomiting::facepalm:

You are a little bit of a Novak fan, though, aren’t you? :lol6:

But seriously, I agree to an extent but I think the nature of the men’s game is that a vacuum gets filled rapidly, even if only temporarily. We’ll get an alpha of sorts to dominate in a lukewarm way until the next great champion rises. Hopefully we don’t even have to wait and Carlos takes over in a huge way, rapidly. He’s the most charismatic and dynamic. Wet dishrags like Tsitsipas winning a free interim slams like jim courier would be bad for the men’s game.

I just hope you’re not right, that the men’s game goes into a morbid decline. It’s not impossible but it’s generally been far too competitive for that to happen for too long…

Your Italian is the type who wins chump change matches like this but when there’s gold bullion on the line, he gets cooked al dente…
:popcorn
Leave pasta out of this, if Rafa cannot hold the gold bullion this year, my wish is to see Matteo win.The draw will be interesting.I would not be surprised if Matteo is in Rafa's half of the draw

I keep telling you guys, I appreciated Novak breaking up the Fedal mythos that tennis began and ended with them! I'm no fan of his game except if he's eviscerating Nadal as in '16 Dubai and '19 Aussie Open! Those matches saved with MP's against him with Federer are the best; esp. remembering that British b!tch putting up the one finger thinking the match was over at Wimbledon in 2019! His rise from the ashes in 2018 was very satisfying, but again it only helped me seeing he stopped the run of Fedal when they each had a 2nd life while he was injured and dealing with family issues in 2017! :shushing-face: :astonished-face::fearful-face::face-with-hand-over-mouth:

Family issues, eh? Caught playing mixeds with a Bollywood tart, or three? His slump from ‘16 to ‘18 was a mirror of Rafa’s slip from ’15 to ‘17, without the Asian opium dens, the porn sets, and the dolly birds, in Rafa’s case. If the more salacious rumours are true, Jelena took Novaks balls out of his pockets and threw them into the crowd.

But he has 3 extraordinary wins in slams against Roger from 2 match points down. One of them, 2011 semi in New York, cost Rafa a Slam. And he did it the right way, on Rogers serve each time, ramming the ball down Rogers throat, and grinning like a young d de Niro while he did it…

Every time Wimbledon comes around my hubby who has been to Wimbledon to watch as he calls him 'The Great Man' aka Pete Sampras, says to me the only reason that the 'human black board' aka Djokovic has managed to win 6 titles, is because the grass is slower lol! not a fan of Novak and his robotic ways., in anyway shape or form

Absolutely the only reason. Djoker would be spitting tennis balls from between his teeth if he faced Pete on fast grass. It’s no contest!

Just a reminder draw ceremony tomorrow at 10am local time,
Unseeded players seeds will want to avoid in R1, Kyrgios, Murray, Goffin
Potential QF opponents for Novak and Rafa, Alcaraz, Berrettini, Hurkacz or FAA
Potential SF opponents for Novak and Rafa, Ruud ( scratches head I cant see that happening) or Tsitsipas

Federer wouldn't have won 8 if the grass had remained choppy & slick! He would have been upset by someone just like Sampras in '96; Krajicek! :-)2

One of the truly great weapons of tennis was the Sampras serve, which in a crunch at Wimbledon never seemed to let him down. The placement and heaviness of that ball, like Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s skyhook in basketball, impossible to defend.

By far the greatest male grasscourt player I had the pleasure of watching.

Pete’s nickname was Pistol, but nowadays it could be The Underrated!
My hubby always called him the Great Man, I knew his nick name was Pistol, The Underrated? my hubby would agree with you on that one.

My hubby has a recording of 1999 Wimbledon final he always watches it when Wimbledon comes around, fond memories I guess

From memory, 3-all in the first, Pete serving at 0-40, bombs his way out of that game and five minutes later the match is over: 6-3, and up a break in the second, 5 games in a row that broke the back of it…
