Fritz just retired with heat exhaustion v. Evans in the 3rd. It IS very hot, but the Californian couldn't take it but the Englishman could?

I thought Fritz was carrying a injury? that was said by one of the commentators on the match, regardless of the heat.
Maybe next year the officials could start their matches later just a thought.

Plus add that he’s a Southern Cal guy…
DC is brutal this time of year...I grew up there. Not the same as SoCal, but still....I guess Evans was going with the Mad dogs and Englishmen mantra. :face-with-tears-of-joy:

I think Kyrgios is taking the court v. Opelka. And Tiafoe early first set v. Vandenzandschlup. Speaking of hometown DC, would love to see Tiafoe win this title at some point.

Regardless of the heat Fritz was carrying a injury, give him some slack okay.

Yes, ma'am. But he did say it was the heat that got him.
I am not ma'am, well makes sense if your carrying a injury in high heat of course it will get to you in the end
Maybe they should start their matches next year a bit later, not so early in the day,

In the US you are a "ma'am." We say it to everyone. I don't see how starting later will help. The heat of the day is 3-4pm on court. If they're going to play in DC in early August, it's going to be hot and humid and heavy. And they play men and women. I don't see how they get through a schedule if they don't play in the middle of the day.

Great TB from Nick to take the first set. Mad skills at the end. Was it his knee that was bothering him last week? Seems to be fine now.

Well he and Thanasi did win the doubles title last week, so his knee injury must of not been that bad.

A buddy of mine moved to Cali from Kentucky, and in the south “ Ma’am” is much more prevalent, it’s almost obligatory when addressing an adult woman. West coast not as much. But as a well brought up southern boy it’s ingrained in my friend’s cultural DNA.

So he’s in a store in the Bay Area and the young female clerk questions why he called her ma’am , and he says “ sorry Ma’am, meant no offense”. She gets even more upset and says ,” are you mocking me? “. He responds “ No Ma’am”.

I think Margaret might have the same feeling about "ma'am" that the UK friends do...it refers to the Queen and royalty. Here in the US, it's a politeness. But yes, more southern, and I did pick it up in the South. And there can be, or can sound like, a mocking tone. In this particular case, Margaret told me off for not taking into account Fritz's injury, so the reply came with a bit of a salute. :)

I have a reflexive "Yes, sir," and "Yes, ma'am" for strangers, and I find it is appreciated.

Gee posters around here are more interested in why I did not like the fact Moxie addressed me as Ma'am than watching the tennis
You must be bored !
BTW Moxie again you are wrong and dont assume it is because of your English friends or about Royalty lol! could be farther from the truth
I am back to watching tennis BTW

I might say "yes ma'am" to be playful with a person to emohasize a point! That question asked concerning Novak made lit'l sense so skipped! :face-with-hand-over-mouth:
