What they should do is demote Shanghai and create a Masters 1000 grass event.
I agree. And had the British not acted a fool this year, I would have proposed upgrading Queens Club to M1000, but now I say give it to Halle. There's a handful of 500s, but no 1000 event currently held in Germany, correct?

I'd give it to Queens. Halle doesn't have the stature, or tradition, and if we decide to punish Wimbledon for making a choice that can be argued is a sensible one (not that I agree with it, but I can accept their intention is good), then we should be careful enough now in how we move forward from this, not to reward the tyrant by further destabilising our institutions. The ATP have made their point. Hopefully this won't be an issue next year...

However, in all of our years of annually discussing the MS1000 they need on grass, I have read that Queen's can't be upgraded to support a MS1000. The ATP has rules on that, and you'd destroy the lovely old club to do that. They have to have x-number of courts/practice courts and x-amount of locker room space and I don't know what all, but Queen's doesn't make the cut. And my understanding is that there is no room to expand.

Maybe Halle doesn't have the stature, but they have a roof and you're right, I don't feel we should reward the tyrant. This thing they're doing doesn't just affect this year. Because of their actions, they forced the ATP/WTA to take a stand w/ the ranking points and now this affects all players this year and next.

I say either Shanghai or Cincy demoted to 500, and Halle or Queens Club makes the most sense to promote to 1000.
I would say Shanghai. It makes more sense. There are 3 M1000s lead up to RG, 2 for lead up to USO. Bercy is good enough to leave as a M1000 at the end of the season. What they could do is demote Shanghai and promote a grass one and then demote Madrid because it doesn't mirror RG anyway and promote an Aussie tournament to M1000 before the AO.

I know, and when we look at how Covid affected tennis in general and Wimbledon in particular in 2020, we've hit some serious turbulence over the last few seasons...

That’s exactly right. The ATP doesn’t just arbitrarily assign a tournament its status based purely on whether or not they think it should be one thing or another. The tournaments have to meet various standards before they can even be considered to be a 250, 500, or 1000. While many of us have thought over the years Queen’s Club should be a Masters 1000, the fact is they don’t meet the requirements. It isn’t that the ATP doesn’t want to elevate them; it’s that Queen’s Club can’t be elevated.

As an example of requirements, here’s a screenshot of a page from the ATP Rulebook concerning the required number of courts for the different levels:

Hey MM, is that Citi event in Chicago? I thought it was held in Washington D.C. I only bring it up because I attended one year when visiting the national capitol
It is in Washington DC this year it is a combined ATP and WTA event, I should have stated that in my original post

I dont think Queens would be big enough to hold such a event

ATP chief explains the reason to take away 2021 ranking points,

"If we gave protections to those who played well at Wimbledon in 2021, would be even more unfair to those who play well in 2022, because the points would still expire after 52 weeks as always happens".

Per Chrisopher Clarey via tweeter,
Travelers to the United States starting Sunday morning will not be required to provide a 'negative COVID test.

International travelers to the United States will still be required to be fully vaccinated.
If this does not change by late August
Djokovic will not be able to enter and play at the USO.

I think Queens could manage it, they have enough courts & when Rafa won it the draw was a 56 player event. But I don't think it will ever become a masters event. I think when they changed it from a 250 to a 500 the tournament has not been as good.

I think it really depends on how much they want to invest in their tournaments. It isn’t an easy ask, but I think long term finding a way to make sure all of the surfaces have a 1000 tournament would be smart especially since so many of the top players only choose to play Wimbledon.

Agree, I dont think Queens will ever be a Masters 1000 tournament, personally speaking there should be a premier grass court tournament before Wimbledon, you look at the other surfaces, clay and HC there are plenty.I also understand keeping up the grass in prime condition is costly, quite frankly that should not be a factor.

To upgrade a grasscourt event to a Masters 1000 , much easier if at least 4 to 5 weeks between the French Open & Wimbledon than the current 3. Personally i don't think thats feasible.

It looks like Federer will use Laver Cup and Basel Open as way to get competitive matches. Then, after that, he will train very hard to make sure his knee is up to par so he can play in 2023.
