Moxie,

The 2 other matches were played on outside courts,of course playing with the roof on does cause more moisture, still having 2 serious injuries, with both players retiring,is not a good enough excuse full stop.
I'm not saying the roof is the only reason, but maybe they should look at the effect. Grass is slippery, esp. in the beginning. That's why they wear different shoes. But this year it seems like an ice rink out there.

Well they used to be able to wear these type of cromets on the back of their shoes,to get a better grip, they banned them, these different shoes are not working and the 'powers that be' have to look at different shoes asap. These type of injuries should not be happening.

But they do wear different shoes, right? Remember that whole exhibition where Roger and Rafa played on a half-grass/half-clay court, and they switched their shoes in between? I think?

Yes they do wear different shoes,on grass, these shoes are not working,as you said before 'it is like a ice ring' maybe they should wear ice skates then, this is serious many players in their press conferences today, like Serena's opponent said she was uncomfortable on the grass,Roger and Andy also mentioned how slippery the grass is.

I still get "Safari can't find the link." Sorry. Maybe just link it?

Did you click in my original post again? If you had clicked on the link in your post in which you are quoting me, that will still be the wrong link.

I'd like to lodge a minor complaint, and I hope ol' you-know-who doesn't show up with his hair on fire because of it, but: at Wimbledon, they always talk about the honor of playing first on Centre Court. The first day is the defending Men's champion, and on the 2nd day, it's the defending Women's champion. Why always the men first? Particularly because they speak of it as an "honor." So why secondary honor to the women? They could at least alternate. Just wanted to mention.
I always thought it had a lot to do with the men's matches going long; BO5 with no TB's! It was figured the tournament could get thru the ladies' draw (96 players w/ seeded byes until the 80's) for the most part in a fortnight, but with bad weather, no lights, and no tennis on Sundays, it just made sense to start the men on DAY 1 to make sure the event was done by Saturday! Gawd I'm old!

AELTC STATEMENT ON CONDITION OF COURTS

The preparation of the grass courts has been to exactly the same meticulous standard as in previous years. Each grass court is checked by the Grand Slam Supervisors, Referee's Office and Grounds team ahead of play commencing, and on both days of the Fortnight they have been happy with the conditions and cleared the courts for play.

The weather conditions on the opening two days have been the wettest we have experienced in almost a decade, which has required the roof to be closed on Centre Court and No.1 Court for long periods. This is at a time when the grass plant is at its most lush and green, which does result in additional moisture on what is a natural surface.

With each match that is played, the courts will continue to firm up.

The Grounds team and Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) take hardness readings every morning in order to ensure that the courts have the right level of moisture and are playing consistently.

Our long-serving ground staff team have experienced nearly every combination of weather conditions possible. They keep abreast of and utilise the latest grass court technologies, prepare for every weather eventuality and react to the current conditions on a daily basis.

We will continue to monitor these readings and adjust our care plan for the grass appropriately.

Loved this quote from Ons Jabeur who is going to play Venus Williams on Wednesdsay,

"It's such an honor, privilege, everything to play Venus" Jabeur said.
"She's a legend and such an inspiration for me I've watched her so many times.I love the way she fights".

She should say "as a little girl I watched her from my crib!" :face-with-tears-of-joy: Jennifer Capirati called Martina "The Ledge" after defeat at Amelia Island! :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Just looking at some interesting matches for Wednesday.....hopefully the rain stays away.

Bianca Andreescu (5) who has had limited time on grass, has a tricky opponent in Alize Cornet
Iga Swiatek (7) vs Vera Zvonareva
V.Azarenka who is under a injury cloud and had to withdraw from a recent tournament in Germany plays her first match against K.Kozlova (UKR)
Lets us see if Sloane Stephens, who defeated Petra Kvitova in her 1st rd match, can continue her form against another American K.Ahn.
J.Ostapenko winner of Eastbourne tournament plays the talented Canadian youngster L.Fernandez.

We're talking about 2 matches. It has nothing to do with how the men get through the draw. Both men and women start on Day 1, in either case.
