Lyon Tournament has had some good matches.

Today Lorenzo Musetti upset Felix Auger Aliassime 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. Has to be a bit unsettling for 20 year old Felix to lose to someone even younger, 19 year old Mussetti. Next Musetti plays another rising young buck , American Sebastian Korda.

Also we have J. Sinner and A. Karatsev battling against each other. More power, captain!

Sinner v Karatsev match was cancelled yesterday due to rain in Lyon
Hopefully the weather will subside today and their match can proceed.
Their match is second up on court central.....which starts at 10.30am

Aslan Karatsev is simply crushing the ball. About to bagel Jannik Sinner in the first set in Lyon.

I think he was trying to decide between matches and his "new" knees, and he has been saying for a few years now that clay is not great for them. I figured he'd at least get a few matches in at Geneva, until I saw his draw. Depending on his draw he might not even go deep into RG. That will put a lot of weight on his playing grass to be ready for Wimbledon.
He should have played Dubai and Miami, then come to Europe and decide how light he wanted his clay season schedule. Maybe Madrid and RG something like that. His Wimbledon 2019 great form had a lot to do with his ground game that he built up on clay. Realistically he even stood a chance to snatch a set off Rafa in RG if it wasn't for that huge wind. Then he came to Wimbledon full of confidence. Now he has none of that, no match play, no confidence. He needs very favourable draw in RG to make even R3, 2nd weeks seems unlikely at this point. I didn't watch him yesterday, but heard people say he came out to play worse than in Doha. I watched him in Doha and tought he was alright, just a bit rusty.

I think he stands better chance in Wimbledon 2022, but he needs to be on tour and accept losses. If he stays healthy it seems he will not retire any time soon. He will most likely choose some happier times to do that so it could be after this pandemic will be under control some time next year.

I was just about to say that probably none of the top seeds want to face him in RG. This guy can play brutal tennis and has no scars against any of the top players. He might lose to Isner like guys, but I'm pretty sure Novak would like him away of his part of the draw, Aslan is too much Wawrinka like with his heavy strokes.

That was a terrific game which Sinner held to keep ahold of his lead.

Dubai was a surprise, since doesn't he have a residence there? He said something about going back to the practice courts, I think. It didn't surprise me that he didn't come to the US for one tournament during COVID (Miami.) You make good arguments for him doing things differently, but nothing for it now. He's usually been pretty good about scheduling, so it's hard to say why he did it this way, but fair to think he had a good reason.

That was worth the wait. Sinner takes it with the break at 4-4, then serves it out. Great match.

Sinner prevails and makes Karatsev repent for the first set bagel. 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 With an ace at MP.

Impressed how unflappable the kid is, earlier his body langauage one wouldn’t have guessed he had just been bageled.

I didn't know this rule either did Jannik Sinner, who was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct during his match v Karatsev, after losing the 1st set 6-0 he took a toilet break and didn't pee.
"I didn't know this rule,I will never do it again" said Sinner ATP Lyon.

Lorenzo Musetti prevailed today at Lyon over Sebastian Korda, 6-3. 1-6. 6-4. The kid is progressing nicely. The beauty of it is that just turned 19, for Lorenzo, every match, win or lose, is a positive learning curve. Bedene tomorrow is the next classroom lesson.

I like Musetti and Korda as potential really good players. I see that Musetti is listed as an "alt". I've never really seen that. Not WC, not LL...does anyone know what that means? (Besides "alternate," obviously.)

I thought it basically was the same thing as a lucky loser

This is interesting for everyone who has ever called a toilet break "gamesmanship." Even Sinner thought it was an opportunity to give himself a stern talking to. No, apparently you also have to pee, or it is considered gamesmanship. Who knew?
