Jesus effing Christ Rafael Nadal has nothing to do with this match. Some of you fixate on the dumbest things and no matter how much you argue it will not change the outcome.

OMG...Medvedev, you have me all disheveled. You had a chance to wrest this tournament and act like a champ, before this match.. You've played this match like an also-ran, and now you might not even take it to 4.

Why do you think he lost the 5-1 lead in World Tour Finals? I told you something was off about him mentally after last year’s US Open. He has more talent than Thiem but Thiem is not flaky. Medvedev rarely plays his best, and highly assertive players can impose their will on him when he goes through his lulls.

Terrific match by Thiem. Medvedev should be disappointed, but he missed his chance against Nadal last year, and as I said at the time, he will likely be haunted by that awful loss for a long time to come.

I have to admit that I had not watched Thiem play this tournament, but had I seen him play I’m sure my expectations would have been different for this match. What is most impressive is how he seized the moment knowing that he is 4 years older than Medvedev and that it’s more important for him to get that first Slam now than it is for Medvedev.

Fabulous performance.
If you'd watched Thiem across this fortnight, your expectations wouldn't have been that different. This was the first match where he brought his A-game. But he's peaking at the right time, so good on him.

No pal, certain moments and certain matches define career trajectories more than others. Look at Nalbandian losing the match point to Roddick in 2003. Had he won the point and taken the title, the trajectory of his career would have likely been quite different. Same with Medvedev. When you are talking about his mental state and why he has a tendency to fade, the Nadal loss last year is a much bigger deal than just one match.

Or look at the Federer-Nadal series on clay. The 2006 Rome match may have looked like just one match, but Federer brought his best for most of that day and did not convert match points. The series was never the same after that. So not all moments are equal.

He blew the first set and then pulled his punch at the start of the 5th. You were scared shitless at the start of the 5th set, but now you are pretending that you felt like the match was in control the whole way.

Medvedev squandered his lead in the first set and then played terrible in the second, allowing Nadal to take control. After that he picked it up and played a level that was too good for Nadal before choking the match away in the 5th.
medvedev never beaten nadal thats the real world only low IQ people bring up what ifs in tennis LOL, like that if comet hit the earth today or nadal chokeing away a AO 2012 title against djokovic missing A easy shot anyway keep doing it because its a match there Nadal his 4th us title and which nadal fans feel really happy about everytime a salty djokovic fan brings it up. nadal won we don,t care if a djokovic fan thinks he should or not we live the real world little boy Nadal won because he was playing god level tennis even you was watching nadal greatness in 5th set if it was djokovic nadal would have won in straight sets LOL.:rose::p

You don’t know that, but I’m not ashamed of not watching Thiem since I don’t find his style of play particularly interesting. That said, I can still acknowledge that the way he played today and the way he seized the moment were very impressive. One thing no one can doubt is that he has paid his dues by now. The moment is his for the taking.

It was a dispassionate remark. Try not to take offense at everything I say simply because I'm the one who typed it.

You’re lucky Djokovic lost to Berdych at Wimbledon in 2010 or else he would have gotten his first Wimbledon a year sooner. And should I also remind you that Djokovic has a pretty strong record against Nadal, especially on hard courts?

Medvedev has some mental issues with finishing out matches. That was clear in the US Open final last year and it has become clearer and clearer since.

Everyone called this one the de facto final. Zverev does have his work cut out for him, as Thiem seems to be rounding into form just in time.

Perhaps you should not take offense to what I say? Most of my remark was about complimenting Thiem’s performance tonight and the way he rose to the occasion at a defining moment in his career. Very impressive.

Yeah, sure. But Thiem did make the Australian Open final. Do you remember if Nadal did by any chance? I don’t recall.

Medvedev was definitely feeling the pressure, but I thought he looked vulnerable in the Rublev match ( though I confess I had Andeiesque glasses on) and Theim tried to do the right mix of toe to toe baseline rallies with the occasional power shots.

I do think Theim is one of the few who can be unfazed by the Russian backboard since he’s been labeled a grinder himself.

That serve needs to improve, though.

For sure. It's already a lot for Med to live up to defending his position in last year's final. Add Djoke going out and then it becomes more pressure because of the expectation.
