So Federer had surgery on his right knee in February and then an additional arthroscopic procedure on the same knee in May/June? Did I get that right...

^^yes. looking at it i think also he does not fancy flying down to aussie and 2wks quaranteen as well as not being ready,

tho he did mention "if his career was to be over then..blah blah" at that swiss award thing he was at...so, yeah. drama.

anyway he really wants to be fit for grasscourt swing, olympics, and us open, so if you think of it that way it makes sense.

Yes,the rehab for the additional procedure in May/June has not healed as he thought it would,though earlier he had confirmed he would be playing the AO.Seeing the AO looks like it will be held starting on February 8th,there is some chance he could still play.

I think it comes down to as you say. Even though the last Major he won was the AO, he'll be putting his eggs in the Wimbledon basket. Plus, then, Olympics and USO. It makes more sense.

It was to be expected! California's in a real "state" (no pun intended)! Gavin's probably doing the best he can, but with so many people, total complience anywhere is pretty much impossible! They're drowning in so many ways! I love California and lived out there for over 10 years, but they've crippled themselves with unnecessary legislative noise in every election cycle, double dipping by city and state workers, insane property tax issues, and being overly needing to satisfy everyone, inflating the cost of the most simple of projects!

Official statement from Tournament Director of the Australian Open,Craig Tiley,

Australian Open will take place at Melbourne Park 8 to 21st February.Tickets will go on sale Wednesday 23rd December,2020.

"This will be a historic AO on so many levels," AO Tournament Director Craig Tiley said."

" For the first time in more than 100 years the AO will start in February.

"From the outset,ensuring players have the best possible preparation for the AO,while at all times protecting the precious COVID free environment that the Victorian community has built through incredible sacrifice and hard work over the past six months has been paramount".

"AO 2021 will feature singles,doubles and wheelchair competitions.AO qualifying will be held offshore,with the women's event taking place in Dubai,and men's qualifying in Doha from 10-13 January 2021.The AO Junior Championships has been postponed until later in the year".

"Players will compete for more than $80 million in prize money during their time in Australia,with the AO total prize pool remaining at the 2020 level of $71.5 million.Players exiting in the first round of the AO will take home $100,000 up 15 per cent from 2020.There have been significant increases to prize money for qualifying and the early rounds with the full breakdown to be provided in the coming weeks".

To people wondering why the Australian Open starts on Feb 8th when everything they re doing now could be done earlier

The reason is of course Roger Federer who was again in close consultation with Tiley on what his suitable date for the event.

"He said to us that February 8 was a more suitable date for him in terms of preparing for the Australian Open," Tiley added. "But a lot will depend on how he responds to his surgery in the next two to three weeks."

As usual, no media outlet is covering the blatant corruption here. This is the reason why I never trust anything that Ben, Clarey and all wrote about the PTPA. They are in the pockets of the administrators and will only provide a biased view of the tennis world.

And another reason PTPA is required, Roger Federer is currently on the player's council negotiating for the players against the tournaments. Why will he side for the players when the tournaments listen to everything he wants. They know that by supporting him and Nadal, they will always get the favorable position at the expense of the vast majority of tennis players

I agree with Margaret that a top player on the tour having a conversation with a tournament director in these very complicated times, with tournaments moving, means really nothing. The fact that they disclose it openly to the press, and the fact that Federer is still unconfirmed for the AO further implies they didn't move the tournament so that Roger can participate. It just doesn't seem as nefarious as you claim. It seems very clear that Tennis Australia, Tiley and the government were working very closely to find a date that was safer, so they pushed it. That it helps Federer's chances of participating seems a pleasant side-benefit, if you ask me.

In the past, you have made the point, w/re: to the PTPA that some top players/their agencies have a financial interest in certain tournaments, and I can see that that is a conflict of interests that should be more closely examined. For now, the PTPA seems to have gone very quiet, and I'm not sure the state of things. It's hard to know if it is actually the way forward for the players, or what will come of all of this in the near and in the more distant future. I do agree that the players have the right to protect their own interests. I wouldn't mind at all seeing a players association made up of both men and women, and separate from ATP/WTA, if they can make that work, and all players' interests are represented equally.

This is where you're reading in: Tiley didn't say he asked Roger his preference. He merely said that Roger mentioned that it would be better for him. And they didn't occult the fact that they'd talked about it. Do you really believe that the AO moved it's schedule for a "maybe" from Roger, when, as Margaret has explained to you, from on the ground, and she has sources close to Tiley, that it's more about pandemic concerns? I think you are looking for conspiracies where they don't exist.
