I got caught up in the last swing of his clay court record in ‘07, and was completely behind him by the time of the Hamburg final.
That was a dramatic switch. So you were hardly a Fed fan if you changed in 2007. It’s hard to imagine someone liking Fed then switching to Nadal. The probability of that happening is 1 in 500 million.

For the record, the Ancient One’s worst USO loss is still the Tommy Robredo QF of six years ago.

Chris Evert once said that the older you get, you just can’t automatically turn on the tunnel vision in matches anymore, no matter how high the stakes. The brain just won’t kickstart. So the match became “work” and you start to wonder out on the court why you’re still playing.

I sensed this was a match that Federer wasn’t feeling it mentally, he knew it and hoped he could bluff his way through because we’re talking Dimitrov
How is his defeat to Robredo the worst? I saw most of the match against Dimitrov and Federer outplayed him in the first set because his serve was on. For some reason his serve dropped in the second set and he began to miss routine shots. I don’t think Dimitrov raised his game. It was Roger’s level that dropped. You make it look like Dimitrov is some kind of tennis star.

I really stopped keeping up with tennis for a bit that decade! So much else was going on, the "Fedal Wars" were getting stale IMO! I didn't even waste my time waking up early to watch those FO massacres! I was somewhat on board giving Roger cover why he looked so badly in those matches, but after Wimbledon '08, it was obvious Nadal "owned" him! It was Nole who brought me back; breaking up the party as it were! It took a couple extra years, but by 2011 he was taking care of business and the media/fans "hated it!" I'd normally say Nole's game is boring AF, but he has a way of locking down a match that's still entertaining! His athleticism shows thru with the "gets" and making the impossible, possible!

I just stated Federer was mentally out of sorts, how the hell that translates to Dimitrov being the new Rod Laver is curious to say the least.

In 2013 Robredo should have had ZERO actual weapons to have beaten Federer that day and yet he outrallied the Fedster on the court, who had no response nor switched a losing strategy.

Why are you so sure it was mental?

Because Dimitrov is the ultimate mental basket case. Again we’re talking Dimitrov.

I tease about the Fedster’s age because his fans always bring it up, but IMO Roger at this point in his career is going to have godawful days regardless of his opponent. He’s been on the tour close to 20 years, a lot of wear and tear on the brain cells.

Federer had been around for several years at that point. Remember him defeating Sampras in ‘01? Remember him winning Wimbledon in ‘03? The AO in ‘04? The Safin match in ‘05? I remember being shocked and disappointed when he lost at the ‘04 Olympics.

So, yes, I was a Federer fan. Not “hardly a Fed fan.”

So it means Roger is a basket case himself because he lost to Dimitrov no? Not sure at 38 he has to worry about brain cells. It could have been something else.

Why is one match being made such a big deal! Rosol and Darcic beat Nadal once at Wimbledon; so what? That's their only claim to fame! Robredo did a lot more than beat Roger that one time! He held a longevity record for quite a while until Roger and Lopez came along! He was in the top 10 at least; got to #5 I see! As for Federer having a hangover from past matches like his Wimbledon meltdown this year, we're really "reaching!" Why can't he just be BEAT? :yesyes:  :ptennis:

Well it's always my fall back "read" if people get too full of themselves talking about how great Nadal's been! Compared to Fedovic, Rafa's had some pretty awful losses at Wimbledon; even with the homogenization of the grass courts which got him 2 titles! It's a wonder "the field" has allowed him to make SF attempts the last 2 seasons! To me nothing's more obscene than Rafa taking grass titles! To me that just tells me the rest of the field is gutless to even allow him to make finals! Thank goodness for Fedovic saving us of late! :yesyes:

I don’t disagree they were bad losses, my point is they don’t define Rafa’s overall Grasscourt record.

2008 isn’t even my main argument: 2007 W is.
The fact that playing in what seemed like 9 straight days in that crazy rain drenched 2007 Wimbledon Rafa still stretched Federer our to 5 sets ( it seemed Federer had like 6 days of rest in contrast between Qtrs and SF’s and finals LOL) in the final was to me the best testament to Rafa and grass. Doubt 2007 Federer was Methuselah yet.

As to “slower” grasscourts, since when do playing conditions have to remain the same and unchanging just to placate one player? I thought the whole point of competitive sports is to adapt to whatever the battle field is that day.

If Wimbledon grass had been slowed down earlier, Jimmy Connors would have ended up with 8 or 9 Wimbledon titles, and Lendl with a handful, but that’s neither here nor there...

He had tons of bad losses in 2013 all year 'cos he had a bad back most of the year so it wasn't that he had no strategy. His movement was impaired most of that whole year. He shouldn't have played half the events he did and gave Nadal especially a ton of cheap wins that year, even 1 at the WTF of all places which says it all with regards to Federer's physical state that year.

Well, the Robredo loss prevented Nadal from completing his Grand Slam of wins over Roger so that's a good thing in a way. But yeah, I wouldn't put too much stock in any of that since 2013 was by far his worst year on tour.

Well that's more my era! Connors was prevented from winning more Wimbledons due to Borg more often than not! OTTH I remember 2 Finals and 2 SF @ least; all 4 going to Borg ('77-81)! The other losses were to S & V specialists like McEnroe, Tanner, & Curren! Slowing the court down might have kept Borg on the tour a few years longer! He went thru a lot of stress making those 6 straight finals (winning 5 str.), overcoming all the odds by playing from the baseline on slick, choppy grass, with a wood racket! Borg played with super tight strings with no real feel to the racket making the sweet spot the size of a golf ball! I played with that Borg Bancroft "Woodie;" strings pulling @ 76#'s! I was a S & V, so it helped make me open the face of my racket to get volleys over! Borg had to save himself countless times in early rounds which makes his accomplishments all the more amazing! Connors will just have to settle for immortality at the US Open!  :cuckoo:

Roger looked pretty pale and sick in that video like he was in pain. Put the interviewers in their place with their dumb questions too as always.

Boy, Fed's the only guy I know who can go 5 sets & still get "an out" by his fans; either sick, hurt, old, or dealing with world hunger! :negative:
