Yeah backhandslapper. I feel like they had their quarter life crises and realized they needed a change and made it happen. Had the money to do it. To bring in guys like Becker and Edberg and Lendl who had been there before.
I think Fed does a lot of things better these days. Naturally you get better at things as you do them more or focus on improving things here and there. But his level in his mid twenties was just so high it's hard to see how he could be considered better than that.
His volleys weren't as good back then. He had other areas to improve. But what he was good at, he was so good at it that he was nearly unbeatable. And I think recency bias gets in our brains and we forget how good people were 10 years ago.
Being able to maintain a high level is part of overall game though. A guy who is only lights out 50% of the match is not as good as the younger one who played great nearly all the time
