Well in the end a strong win from Rafa. Lost a close one their first time here. Won a close one here today. Plenty of drama. But some seriously good tennis from both men. Good match. I'm just glad Kyrgios didn't go away. Didn't disappear.

I'm not sure it's even worth saying, "Hopefully he can keep this up." Because he almost certainly can't. He'll go back to being so so until he gets another big match up. Until he puts in the work day in and day out on the practice court and gets a stable coach, which is more important just for the fact that he'd let someone speak into his life, he'll continue to struggle on tour.

Alright.

I'll say a few more things.

I didn't think this match was all about "personal stuff". Nor did I think this was all about nick's big serves. He did well time and again at least in the second and third sets and at times in the fourth set. He's aggressive intent is great. One two combinations are natural for him. He has a big forehand. A big serve. His retrieving skills are handy too in times of demand. His shot selection is good. He is capable of big time tennis.

Well have a good one folks. I'm gonna go enjoy the rest of my July 4th with some friends who don't care about tennis. Need a break anyways after a long day today. I've actually been up since the start this morning. Which is 6am my time.

Solid day though.

Looking forward to Federer/Pouille. Nishikori/Johnson. Nadal/Tsonga.

Good for Sousa and Evans. One of them will make the 4th round. They took out both seeds. Two of the seeds that have had rather poor years in Cilic and Basilashvili.

Sandgren coming out on top of that 5 set battle 8-6 is impressive. Another good run at a slam. Simon 34. But I'm rather surprised he didn't deal with him. Usually a class above on the grass. And a good win for Millman today. He gets Querrey now though. Seeing as Querrey is still short on matches, Millman has a chance there. But I do think Querrey is the favorite.

With Schwartzman's straight sets victory just Fognini and Fucsovics need to finish up. And Fognini just got the break to serve for it.

Should be a good day tomorrow. I'm interested in basically every match in the queue for tomorrow.
Djokovic/Hurkacz. FAA/Humbert. Medvedev/Goffin. Verdasco/Fabbiano. Paire/Vesely. My most anticipated matches for the day. But the other three are still very important and will likely decide the quarterfinalist from the second quarter.

I think this match against Kyrgios will help Nadal tremendously against Tsonga on Saturday knowing he just faced a big server in the previous round.

A big server who today really didn't serve anywhere near as well as he can. I reckon Tsonga will serve better than this though I don't expect him to win. Kyrgios today reminded me of Janowicz (who incidentally was scheduled to possibly return for Wimbledon but seems he hasn't made it back on tour yet from injury) when he played against Murray in that semi (forget the year and too lazy to check). He served well at times but it was way, way too predictable and he rarely mixed it up like Janowicz that year. Too many down the T. Needed to go for body serves to mix things up but didn't and the 2 tiebreaks Kyrgios played very poorly. I was expecting a better match today tbh. Kyrgios over hit a ton of backhands too. Nadal didn't need to do too much imo to win and the scoreline made it look closer than it really was given Kyrgios was really poor in both TBs.

His talent is obvious but in the current game you have to be able to move. And right now his fitness is so weak that he can't move well at all and therefore he wasn't able to compete well In rallies. I mean his return and baseline game were completely harmless today, people just look at the score and assume he played strong tennis.

He served well as you expect him to do. As far as performances go against the top guys this was actually a step down compared to what we usually see out of him. Nick usually makes them earn it from the baseline more than we saw today. I think the score line would've been similar today against a lot of the tour.

Tsonga has even less talent than Kyrgios, so he has no prayer against Nadal. As has been said on these boards, Tsonga has a very low tennis IQ.

Like Nick he has no return and no backhand. He might even move worse than what we saw from Nick today. Ali is old and oft-injured and wasn't an elite mover to begin with.

A lot depends on how much Roger has left physically, IMO.

Only is a question because of this garbage surface. Roger was having all sorts of problems hitting through the court today and was pretty lackluster. Hopefully he seizes the moment with career on the line. Roger's half is winnable but it won't be easy on this stuff. Beating an in form Djokovic on this surface is not happening for him realistically. He needs to take care of business and then get help.

There is simply no comparison between Tsonga's FH and Kyrgios FH. No comparison. For one simple reason, and it really baffles me how people refuse to see it. Kyrgios can only hit hard when the ball is high enough -- he needs to hit a flat shot, facing forward or slightly downwards. Otherwise he loops the ball to the back of the court. Tsonga can play hard almost every single shot (actually, he goes for it too much), he has the talent/technique to do that. He is a completely different player than Kyrgios. It should be a good match.
