Just an update regarding Del Potro who will undergo surgery in Barcelona on Saturday to repair his fractured patella.

'I don't know what will happen next,' he said.'Hopefully I will have a good recovery.I hope my knee can heal properly'.He added 'If that match was the last of my career, that I don't know.During rehab I will be able to think clearly.I will know what my body is able to do'.
Yep, and he will be under Dr. Cotorro supervision. He should think about Murray and his two hip surgeries and now is playing doubles very well and hopefully singles too

Is he going for surgery in a hurry in the hopes of competing in Wimbledon? That is not a good idea. Even if he manages to play Wimbledon, he won't be competitive enough. Best to give some rest.

Of course not. How could he? He's still wondering if he'll even play tennis again.

Exactly.....? how could anyone go to rehab after having a fractured patella and be right to play Wimbledon in a few weeks time....this is the second time he has fractured it.It might be the end of his current season.

I read in the Argentinian press, not long ago, that he actually considered himself retired, for a time, during his last injury lay-off, though "no one knew it." He thought he was done, but then he found the drive to try again. As you've said above, @MargaretMcAleer, I really do wonder if he has the mental strength to keep rehabing and coming back. We shall see, but it's a damned shame.

Agree,he has had such bad luck, numerous surgeries on his wrist's alone, for a tennis player the power starts in the wrist's for starters.I do not blame him quite frankly if he decides to retire after this current setback.

It would break my heart if he had to, but I don't know how many times you get knocked down, until you finally can't get up again.

What are people talking about; "bad luck?" WHY? Who can be surprised of injuries to of all players Del Po who's obviously as fragile as water-logged balsa wood? He knows this and goes all out anyway, probably assured that any match can be his last! In past eras, tennis wasn't always so physical with the serve and overheads the only thing traveling over a 100 MPH! Heaven knows a senior with a potbelly could still compete! That person wouldn't get thru qualifying today! All the more surprising that Nole and Roger have basically been "seriously injury-free!" They had maybe one lost season, while Rafa's lost multiple years of play, but the body has significant mileage! He won't last as long as Roger; that's for sure! Novak's a grinder too, but working on flexibility has saved him a lot of wear and tear!

Well he did slip over and fracture his patella for the second time, and had to withdraw from the tournament,I called that 'bad luck' I am a huge fan of Del Potro and have met him personally,I too have watched the tennis game for over 40 years. As I am in the medical profession I am off to work to help deliver new born babies.

I wish Juan a fast recovery even if I'm not very optimist about his career

Yep, I remember years ego when I said Delpo could suffer injuries because his height and his big body, I was right

I've been hearing for all too many years that Nadal won't last long. It gave me some comfort for awhile thinking he wouldn't be playing. And yet here we are.

I never said it would happen NOW; just that he won't last into his mid to late 30's like Roger! You have to admit he's lost a lot of time on the tour due to the abuse of his own body! Just not a fan of his style; allowing just about anyone to take him to the limits of elimination unnecessarily! Nole will know when to retire; not sure about Fedal! :nono:  :banghead: :cuckoo:   :ptennis:

Plenty of taller guys are fine. The wrist injuries were self inflicted 'cos he hits the ball so hard and these recent knee issues were just completely bad luck. The last one was a very timid slip and could happen to anyone at any time regardless of height.

I don't see why you call delPo's wrist injuries "self-inflicted" because he hits the ball hard. Would you have preferred that he hit the ball less hard over his career in order to prevent injuries he did not yet have? I don't think players know where there Achilles heel(s) might be when they develop their style of play. As to your point about tall guys, some have had troubles: Safin, Raonic, and Cilic somewhat, but others have been mainly fine. Certainly Karlovic has been, but he doesn't have to move as much as others...but still, he's 40. On the other hand, Nishikori isn't a big guy at all and he's been plagued by injuries. Hewitt's not especially big and injury ended his career. IMO, it's hard to know who will be more injury-bit than others, but I don't really believe in "blaming" their playing style beforehand. At a certain point, when they do get injured, some have to make adjustments to prolong their careers and protect their bodies. And then sometimes there is just bad luck. Del Potro does seem to have more than his share of it.
