A guy just played great and took Nadal to five sets in a 4 h 48 min match and you're here acting like it was a cakewalk. That guy is Del Potro too, not some chopped liver. You can talk about his career post injuries and all, but please stop with the insane narratives. DP is a tough outing when he's on, and while he's not the player he was in 2009, particularly off the backhand, he's legit.

He isn't chopped liver but he stopped being a great player after the surgeries. This guy has done nothing since 2009, he is an easy out for all the top guys aside from a choking Federer. Take out Roger's gifts and this guy wouldn't have won anything in his career.

Did you seriously just say "you could argue Del Potro over Kevin Anderson, and only maybe"? Get out of here.

Remind me what DP has accomplished the last 9 years? Looks like 3 GS semis. Even weak KA has 1 GS final and now a semifinal in the past year. And this is grass, KA has a way better serve.

I thought this was fast clay. Or was it hards this year?

Also, Del Potro had 32 aces. He served huge. Are you SERIOUSLY saying Anderson is a tougher opponent than Del Potro?

A 5 hour match is not an easy out, come on.

It's fast high-bouncing hards. You fall in love with aces quite a bit. DP served only 63% and Rafa isn't exactly hard to ace. KA is certainly a much better server and DP is obviously much better aside from serve. You're just overrating DP by quite a bit and that's the norm around here, especially with Nadal fans.

Who has DP beat in a big match aside from Roger? He hasn't won one since 2009, at least not on equal motivation. 2012 he beat Djoker in bronze medal match after Nole had won bronze in 2008 and in 2016 he beat an awful version of Nadal in the semis after Nadal had won gold in 2008.

Not me. I would certainly agree with you that JMDP is a tougher opponent than KA. However, KA played above his normal level today (if I can borrow that phrase from Wozniacki).

But KA is some killer? Because if we're nit-picking as much as you are, who's a tough match for anyone? You can say Wawrinka is no longer relevant, Thiem is a tomato can outside of clay, Zverev is a scrub at majors, Raonic hasn't done shit aside from that one final, etc... So who's considered a tough match-up? Cilic I guess, but even with him you can point out to how inconsistent he's been. Hell, if Nadal beats Djokovic, I'm sure you'll point out to how Novak has been crap for 2 years, etc... So, there's...nobody?

JMDP played well but Nadal toughed it out; though for the SFs I agree that Rafa will have to amp the level if Djokovic is really fully back.

Roger and Rafa have been the only good players on tour since the start of 2017. I don't even think DP is #3 or #4 for best players at the moment and in this current field that makes him irrelevant. Djokovic may be back slightly but that's not a given either. This is the first time he's been relevant at a major since 2016. That's a long time.
You've seen me point out how awful this field is a lot. Ultimately that will change and that's why I pound the table for Roger on the next 7 months. This competition is still likely to be trash for that period. And instead he fucked up royally and it may be the biggest loss of his life if that fuckwad makes his 20 weak.

KA is a joke yet he beat a much tougher grass court player than Rafa today. Taking Rafa to 5 off clay isn't some monumental achievement no matter how much you want to pretend it is.

JMDP is ranked #4 currently. He got relegated in seeding at Wimby due to grass formula.

A 60% Nole is better and Cilic has proven to be more of a threat at majors than DP for awhile now.
Their results over the last year + aren't that different, though Cilic has made 2 finals. (But I know how you feel about making finals if you don't win.) Cilic dumped out of this W in the 2nd round. And he fell out of last year's USO in the 3rd round when he had (and you know I hate to use the term) a veritable cupcake draw. I won't bore everyone with the side to side, but don't try to make Cilic out to be so much more fabulous than Juan Martín in the last 12 months, anyway.

You ain't great if you don't win. That is fact. But yes a guy who made 2 GS finals has done better than the guy with 2 semis. And that doesn't even include the few years before it. Cilic has had much better results at slam level for quite some time now.

Broken's point is that JMDP is one of the better players on offer and he's not wrong. You undervalue him because it suits you in so many ways.

I agree he is one of the better players on offer...and he still is pretty much irrelevant. You, Broken and most others have a big soft spot for DP because of the injuries and the fact he's a nice and likable player. If the guy's results have been bad for 9 years I'd pay more attention to that because results are what matter.

On grass he is a comparable threat. Obviously not conparable career wise and even currently in his reduced state DP is better than KA. Let's just say I wasn't remotely afraid of either player if Roger didn't play like a clown.
