Mischa wouldn't have posed any problems to Nadal. He already beat him twice last year. It takes more than serving and volleying to take out Rafa. If you notice Rosol, Darcis, Brown, Kyrgios all had barely played Rafa before playing him on grass. Muller did but he knew what it took to beat Rafa on grass.

Rafa is most vulnerable on grass when he has not played an opponent at all or at least much outside of grass. He can''t get into the other dude's mind.

No offense but this is a silly excuse. Even Wimbledon grass is usually somewhat fast the first week, low and quick bounce simply means Rafa is extremely beatable even by mediocre players. Back when he was younger he could grind his way to victories easier in early rounds.

Denis wins in 4. Good job by the young man.

Indeed a good job, especially considering the opponent, who was having great success on grass this season.
Borna did well in warm ups and sucked here.

But, Shapo, who is born to play in big stages, sucked big time in all grass warm-up tourneys, but rises to the occasion to beat a tricky opponent. Shapo for president!

Worth to mention all 3 teenagers, Shapovalov, Tsitsipas and de Minaur passed the first hurdle.

One final look at the odds before the tourney begins (and after Andy Murray withdrew). There are 17 players with a puncher's chance and four contenders. Most important change is that JMDP's prospects have gone up considerably.

1. Federer 15/8 (35%)
2. Novak 11/2 (15%)
3. Cilic 7 ( 12.5%)
4. Rafa 15/2 (12%)
5. Nick / JMDP / Sasha 20 (5%)
8. Raonic 28 (3%)
9. Coric / Dimitrov / Thiem 50 (2%)
12. Anderson 66 (1.5%)
13. Edmund / Shapo / Nishikori / Isner / Goffin 100 (1%)

After the first round, four of the 17 original contenders (bolded ones) are gone. But, the top 8 are still there.

After the first round, we have a sole rep of GBR still standing. He will probably win one more match and then die at the hands of Novak for GBR free second week.

Realistically you're probably right. Optimistically he'll win.

Shap is really living up to his hype! He could have very easily gone done in flames under this glaring spotlight, but he seems to play the same whereever; just reckless with abandon! I just checked Wiki page for the tourney and read they'll finally start penalizing these jokers who show up for a check only to WD! It's so ABOUT TIME!

Are you talking about Edmund? If so, didn't he defeat Djoke on clay this year? That's not a gimme match for Novak

Don't be so confident about Rafa is beatable by mediocre players, agreed that happened before for different reasons but maybe this time you could be a little bit disappointed with the next results, you never know...........

I spoke too soon. Feddies not to worry. Alex De Minaur (assuming he wins his next match :p), will also be a good candidate to send the Peasant for fishing in Majorca. :cheerleader:
More peasant than your dear idol? come on, he is probably the most tacky player of all the Tour . "Aunque la mona se vista de seda mona se queda" (although the monkey is dressing in silk he is still the monkey) :lol3:

We gave him one simple assignment, to follow in the footsteps of esteemed fellows such as Rosol, Darcis, Brown, Kyrgios and Muller. He failed.
Note that there was no whining when Fed's projected 3rd round danger, Coric, went out. That seems a fair trade, (and equal "luck." For your buddy, Monfed.) You guys are becoming insufferable, including with the insults.

Yes, yes he did beat Novak in 3 sets in Madrid. That is his only win over Novak. Novak has certainly moved up few notches since Madrid. Novak is probably not good enough to win the tourney, but is certainly good enough to make the tourney free of British folks.

Why are you so keen to see Wimbledon free of Brits (at least on the ATP side?) EDIT: Oh, because Djokovic is in Nadal's half. Duh.

Well if Djoke's game has improved that will equal the crowd support Kyle will receive. So you're looking at a draw.

You are worse than me. I was only calling Rafa a Peasant. You are calling him a monkey. Have some respect. :nono:

I thought Nadal played well enough against Dudi Sela. The movement looked good, but it should improve more, ditto the serve where he had a little more pop than usual.

Nice to see Bags get a victory, Theim has no idea how to play on grass, though I suspect it's more a mental letdown from the French.

Djokovic's win was precisely what he needed, no drama and no suspense. He really is a human Gumby at his best retrieving form. I do hope he and Zverev both get tested by playing each other, speaking of which Misha's brother: I thought he's have pulled through his first match, alas.

It's funny how grass played under sunny hot conditions used to be considered the ideal. Like Clay, Grass plays slightly different on different days , ie sunny versus wet and drizzly and lets' not even talk about the wind factor. I love outdoor tennis because the of the X factor of the conditions and how players have to adjust to them.

I think you have cut Mischa a little slack. He won hist first atp title on Sat. He's probably suffering a letdown because he's not been in that position before.
