If Chung was leading in the match, he'd have handled the pain. He quit because he realised he had no chance of winning and Federer was running him ragged.
That's highly likely but no one can tell how much pain someone else is going through or what's going on inside someone else's head. Everyone has a different pain threshold. Sometimes we try to put a brave face on things & work through the pain but can't quite make it. It might have been an excuse because he knew he was being thrashed & Federer was the better player but didn't want to accept that but no one will ever know for sure.

I'm pretty confident he could have at least made it to the end of the set.. it was probably 2 points away.

Wouldn't it be great if they found out that Chung had bet an enormous amount of money that "Roger Federer won't win 2 sets against me..."?

I think he was. I woke up to the MTO, so I only watched a few points. IIRC, it was 30-all and 2-5. He could have hit 2 serves and quit at the end of the set. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt, though. This once. As @Busted said, they tell us it was a deeply subcutaneous blister. Must have hurt like hell. And he's never been at this level on the biggest stage before. Maybe his head was reeling and he didn't make the best choice.

Carillo said before Chung stepped on court that he was suffering from blisters. The kid didn’t quit because he was losing. Koreans are generally very stoic so his retiring tells me he was in serious pain. I hope he recovers quickly from this experience.
