Well the most he can get by playing on is to play hurt while getting smashed. Better off to just stop.To be honest, as much as he's hurting I reckon he should have forged on. You don't know how many of these slam semis you'll be in
Yeah, plus you can give the kid the benefit of the doubt and figure he really couldn't.Well the most he can get by playing on is to play hurt while getting smashed. Better off to just stop.

Fed was on court barely over an hour and so he getting one day rest vs. Cilic getting 2 days rest should not play a role in the final.
I for one would not offer it as an excuse in the unlikely event Fed loses the final.
It seems like folks are being awfully judgmental on Chung, especially as Roger just got the easiest possible pass into the final.I agree, it was good to stop. But, he should have completed at least that game or set as someone else already remarked.

Look, I get it. I do think playing on is the honorable thing, esp. the further you get in matches, and the greater the importance of the tournament. (I think it was very poor form for Djokovic to have retired 3 games from the finish in the final v. Murray in Cincy '11, for example.) But given that it was said here by several people who will also be pleased as punch that it went so easy for Roger, it seems a bit punitive. The kid was above his own tree line, and you can't tell how much he was hurting. Plus, it isn't the final.Nobody is thrashing this kid as he does not have experience of how to handle these situations. In general, in later stages of GSs, one tends to play. For example, Cilic played out the whole match despite blisters in last Wimby, because he knew it is considered terrible to retire in the final of GS, unless absolutely necessary.
This being SF and considering blisters is not a deadly condition, I think Chung should have at least waited until the second set is over before quitting. The only reason, he did not do so, I believe, is that being young he did not know the proper etiquette. So, I would not blame him.
