Carol, I am a fan of neither Novak or Rafa, nor do I dislike either one, so why would be partial to Novak over Rafa?

You are the most biased fan on this message board, you realize that, right?

Anyhow, you have to line the opponents up by round:

Verdasco vs. Mayer (slight edge to Verdasco/Novak)
Istomin vs. Baghdatis (solid edge to Baggy/Rafa, as herios corrected me...but not "infinitely")
Carreno Busta vs. Zverev (slight edge to Z/Rafa)
Dimitrov vs. Bautista Agut (slight edge to D/Novak)

Again, Rafa has a harder draw but it isn't by much.
That Rafa's draw is slightly harder than Novak's is also natural because the No. 2 seeding should simply advantageous over the No. 9 seeding in regards to the way to the quarters.

Overall I think over the first two rounds the difficulty of their draws is more or less equal, then Novak probably got one of the easier options for round 3 out of the players seeded 25-32 but potentially the most difficult one of the 13-16 seeds for round 4. Zverev, while technically the easiest draw for round 3 for a No. 9 seed, is potentially among the more difficult opponents of the 17-24 seeded players for Rafa while Monfils is likely to be the best draw Rafa could have got for round 4 out of the 5-8 group.

So in relation to their ranking the difficulty of both draws is quite normal in my opinion and there's no reason for either to complain.

Guys, mudslinging again. Let's not resort to that please. Let's admit it, personal preferences aside, we can all admit earnestly that all of the big 4 are distinguished achievers in the sport and in life in general. And so are all the players in history who made it to the top 2 at some point. Let's not loathe any person of such stature. That said, we do have the right to have our own guys to root for but opinions regarding any player should be respectful as is due at the very least. This is only my personal standard. But I just wanted to share it. I think it makes a friendly and respectful environment.

I suppose this is a fair point - the only difference between No 9 ranking and 1-8 ranking before QF in terms of the draw is R4 - #1-8 will face a player ranked #9-16 (if seedings hold).

So Nadal was probably a bit lucky to get La Monf (rather than, say, one of the top 5), while other than Nadal there probably aren't any choices that would clearly have been more dangerous for Djokovic than Dimitrov.

Anyway, I don't really think that either Djokovic or Nadal have much reason to complain about the draw (not that there is any point in it anyway - random choices are what they are!). Let's remember they could have drawn each other in R4 ... ;)

In the 3rd round the 1-8 seeds play the 25-32 seeds and the 9-16 seeds play the 17-24 seeds. Then in the 4th round the 1-4 seeds are drawn to meet the 13-16 seeds an 5-8 play 9-12. So the earliest they could have met each other would have been the quarters and Novak having the easier 3rd round opponent on paper also happened by default.

But overall I agree that none of them has an especially lucky or unlucky draw and the degree to which Novak has it easier is simply something he was more or less guaranteed already before the draw by being ranked significantly higher.

Thanks - for some reason I never before realised that they separate the 9-16 and 17-32 into two separate groups. Learned something new today - thanks!
