I don't see that as automatic dream combo, but interesting.
Cilic drops out of Montreal (adductor injury) too. Now Montreal will be missing 3 GS winners (Novak, Stan and Cilic).
No word yet on Andy. He too might drop out due to hip issues.
Wow. That escalated quickly. And Fedal can only gain ground because they didn't play the 2nd half of last year while Andy loses ground, right? Now Murray has dropped out as well. Neither has dropped out of Cincy yet though. Basically the folks in Montreal are doing a happy dance because Federer and Nadal can't meet until the final. Since Murray's out if Nadal makes it to the semis he'll take over as #1.
Roger, yes. Rafa came back for the Olympics and then played a bit before shutting it back down, so he does have something to defend, but not much. (He made mostly cameo appearances from Cincy thru Shanghai.) Obviously Andy had loads to defend after the USO, and Djokovic has closed down his year. That's why all the Rafa/Roger talk about YE#1.Wow. That escalated quickly. And Fedal can only gain ground because they didn't play the 2nd half of last year while Andy loses ground, right?
Rafa and Roger as no. 1 and no. 2 seeds in a masters in 2017. Say that again. Ridiculous. Wow.Everyone knows that Rafa and Roger are top two seeds at Montreal. What you may not know is that Thiem and Sasha round up the top four seeds. This certainly is an important occurrence. The lost generation are left behind and the new generation has risen to the top.
He had a stiff neck early in the match and seemed to say he couldn't look up, so the trainer rubbed cream into it and massaged it, and it seemed to loosen up and not bother him after a few games. I don't think this is one of "those" injuries, so hopefully he's fine.I wonder if Delpo"ll play Montréal....he called the trainer yesterday in Washington...not very encouraging !!

Roger needs to be blamed for the plethora of withdrawals from the rest of the season.
A proposal cut short the DC singles matches to 3 sets was voted down by ITF despite having the backing of ITF board.
Another proposal to hold the DC finals at a neutral location was not even brought to vote (despite having the backing of
ITF board) as the vote was doomed to be a big failure. As far as I am concerned, good news on both fronts.
Surprised by the vote on sets, thought it was a done deal.
Personally, I'm not exactly happy about that. I'm willing to have the longer conversation about DC again, but I think it is the last place anyone needs to feel sacrosanct about the 5-setters. And I'm not opposed to figuring out a one-time tournament with all teams. IMO, if DC doesn't change it's format it will die. The 4x per year and extra travel is punitive on players who spend their lives on airplanes and in hotels. And hardly anyone watches. Why? Because there is so little enthusiasm. Make it an Olympics-type event, which is what has been proposed. And I'd say, combine it with Fed Cup. You'll have to play off somewhat to get to a final group, but there would be a lot of enthusiasm for major co-ed team play-off, IMO.Surprised by the vote on sets, thought it was a done deal.
Do you like combining it with Fed Cup? I do.The Olympics-type event is a good idea, IMO. There have been all those commercial team tennis events lately, so I figure the idea must have some appeal, public wise. Stack everyone together once a year for two weeks and you would get a lot of attention. Everyone would love to see the big guys shoulder to shoulder with his less-known countrymen trying to make it happen. Everyone knows one thing that kills DC right now is the personal effort it demands from a top player. The guy needs to play two five setters over two days, let alone a possible doubled match. As I always said, I don't like the idea that a one man team can win a tie in DC. DC should find a way to privilege depth (of a nation in rankings). This way it would solve all its problems at once.
