exactly, Fed should've lost. There is no doubt who the better player in this match was, it's just that he didn't win.
This time we firmly disagree. If there´s no unlucky injury, no outside influence, the better player wins the match, period.
Yes, I agree that Cilic played better for large portions of the match. In fact, he played out of his mind. Lot of credit to Federer to sill win the match.
Let´s see.
Set 1 was very close untill the breaker, and up till there I would give a slight edge to Federer. But in the breaker Cilic stepped up and fully deserved to win.
Set 2 was close too. Federer himself lost a lot of opportunities to level that set (you might remember that absurd back hand miss which would set up double break, I guess). Cilic played better (but not THAT much better), and deserved to win.
Set 3 Federer played better, period. You can say Cilic lost an opportunity, yes, but from there Federer raised his level and won conffortably.
Set 4 was extremely close. I say is a coin toss. You may recall the match points, but Federer served well on those. The first golden opportunity was missed by Federer on his first match point. In this set Cilic erased two break points and won a game with four straight aces.
Set 5 Federer played better. He created opportunities in two or three games, played well on all key points. Deserved to win the set.
Of course it is easy to see Cilic wining that match. But it was played at too high a level for us to expect that it is easy to maintain it all the time. They were serving big, hitting hard, finding angles and making good passing shots. It is not realistic to expect them to keep it up all the time with no errors.
