exactly, Fed should've lost. There is no doubt who the better player in this match was, it's just that he didn't win.

This time we firmly disagree. If there´s no unlucky injury, no outside influence, the better player wins the match, period.

Yes, I agree that Cilic played better for large portions of the match. In fact, he played out of his mind. Lot of credit to Federer to sill win the match.

Let´s see.

Set 1 was very close untill the breaker, and up till there I would give a slight edge to Federer. But in the breaker Cilic stepped up and fully deserved to win.

Set 2 was close too. Federer himself lost a lot of opportunities to level that set (you might remember that absurd back hand miss which would set up double break, I guess). Cilic played better (but not THAT much better), and deserved to win.

Set 3 Federer played better, period. You can say Cilic lost an opportunity, yes, but from there Federer raised his level and won conffortably.

Set 4 was extremely close. I say is a coin toss. You may recall the match points, but Federer served well on those. The first golden opportunity was missed by Federer on his first match point. In this set Cilic erased two break points and won a game with four straight aces.

Set 5 Federer played better. He created opportunities in two or three games, played well on all key points. Deserved to win the set.

Of course it is easy to see Cilic wining that match. But it was played at too high a level for us to expect that it is easy to maintain it all the time. They were serving big, hitting hard, finding angles and making good passing shots. It is not realistic to expect them to keep it up all the time with no errors.

What a  Cilic is, he made so many silly errors and finished completely melted, boooo

A meltdown of epic proportions. I left in the 3rd set to go and run some errands, but at that point I could see that Cilic was losing the plot. Glad I didn't delay taking care of my business for that!

I didn't realize you had to bail before it was over. That must have been a nice "Good morning" for you. Roger's commitment to pulling that off was impressive. Really showed the difference between a champion's mentality and the lack of one. Cilic has never especially impressed me before or since the USO. Sure talent and a great serve when it's working, but the head of an also-ran.

Andy had to go 5 v. Tsonga today. Jo-Wil did play some impressive tennis today. Nice to see him back, but Andy was playing some great grass tennis in the 5th.

I liked Murray's (typically dry) response in his presser when asked about the 3rd and 4th sets. He said something to the effect of: "Jo is a really good tennis player." :)

Thanks and spot on @mrzz . How are things in Argentina? I think Del Potro is playing the next tie in Davis Cup to qualify for the Olympics.
He's my dark horse for a gold in Rio and the US Open if that backhand continues to get stronger.

Respectfully,
masterclass

Hope everything is fine there, as I am from Brazil. But don´t worry, I really like my south american "hermanos", and I actually root a lot for del Potro. If he stays healthy, I am pretty sure he can still be a factor in the years to come (unless....)

Yeah, was getting into the early hours and I had to be up at 5am, so couldn't see it through... happy to see the turnaround... next stop Milos.

Oops, sorry about that,@mrzz. I don't know why I thought you were from Argentina. Well, even better you are from Brazil. I have been reading some "disaster" stories regarding preparation for the Olympics, incomplete venues only one month away from the Games, the country in bad fiscal shape, having a hard time even with providing infrastructure for transportation with the games, not to mention the political stuff, and the Zika virus. Don't know if you are from the Rio area, but do you have any more info? IT seems to me that IOC could be doing more to get other countries to help out in the spirit of the Olympics. Seems like some cash injection/better management is needed in the short term, before bad publicity harms things more, especially in terms of attendance and athlete participation. A lot has been invested so far and they definitely need to recoup a good amount of it.

Respectfully,
masterclass
