RG crown in 2016 just became a little more academic.

I don't think djokovic has any opposition in any event and at any slam.

there may be a small chance he can be ambushed at Wimbledon. a very bloody tiny chance at best.

djokovic has no competition and still he is outworking the whole world.

that is how you get to 20 slams.

Andy chopping up Chardy like a cheap garden salad.

Andy can win the French Open if Djokovic manages to get derailed there.

Rafa has zero chance at RG even if Djokovic takes up another sport tomorrow.

I had some hopes but it looks like they were quickly dashed.

Rafa is in no shape to make deep run at RG.

I guess I was just hoping and wishing.

How the hell can he really navigate RG with a limited game and such drastically reduced fitness.

don't be surprised to see a murray vs djokovic final at RG.

andy is finding some sustained traction on clay.

2 masters finals in a row is huge for him. he can win today.

I agree, I think Murray can win.
Roger does not look fully fit
Murray dispatched Nadal in Madrid
Wawrinka, well his form seems to have disappeared and Novak looked mentally shattered today.

Given a good draw Murray can win RG, and by that I hope Federer and Nadal both end up in Novak's half of the draw

I will be hoping that Novak brings his slow starting and cranky attitude with him to Paris. (Sorry Djokovic fans, but what do you expect?) I don't think losing today matters so much, but looking rather more vulnerable than he has in a long time does. No matter how he tries to diffuse it, he's got a lot of pressure going into RG, and it seems to be wearing on him. I guess we'll all be anxious to see the draw.

stan: washed up and irrelevant

kyrgios: suboptimal movement and essentially a fast court player

nishikori: too short and too fragile. I cant see him going too far at RG. he is better in best of 3 sets environments.

that is it. there is nobody else who can be a factor at RG other than the big 3:

1. djokovic
2. Andy
3. Clay Warrior (Rafa)

Thanks Baron @britbox .

Rafa has 17 European clay matches under his belt.
He won in Monte Carlo, won in Barcelona, but lost to Djokovic in Rome.

As 9 time champion, he is still the man to beat in best of 5 at Roland Garros, but Djokovic will probably be the favorite.
We will have to see the draw pans out.
Rafa needs some easy matches in the first 4 rounds before he runs into players he fears like Ferrer, Murray, and Djokovic.
By then he'll have 21 matches under his belt.

Oh, and he has to ditch the ridiculous wide doubles-like service position on his ad serve before then as well.
These players all have too good a backhand return to give them an advantage on break points or game/set points by failing Tennis Geometry 101.

Djokovic should recover his energy levels by Roland Garros in over a week.
Murray as well. He has some new found confidence on the dirt. Let's see how he responds after winning Rome.
Federer is still laying low waiting for the grass season to start. I would be very surprised to see him go past the QF, but much depends on his draw.
One doesn't know when or if Stanimal will make more final appearances at RG. He has 2 slams in the bag, he is 31, had his day in the sun at RG. Only Rosewall and Gimeno back in the very early years of the Open Era won RG after age 31.

Thiem, well we need to see the draw. I think he is still another year or two away from mounting a serious challenge here.
Kyrgios is better suited for Wimbledon or the US Open.

I forgot Nishikori. He is certainly capable, but for how long will he last before exhausting or injuring himself?

Respectfully,
masterclass

Nice post masterclass, although I don't think I'd include Ferrer as a player Nadal fears. I think Ferrer fears Rafa...not just on clay either.

I don't think Stan will return to the big dance either, but I don't think he's done... Done winning majors maybe (I didn't expect to win any in the first place, as I mentioned before)... but not done as a dangerous player who can take people out when the tap is running hot.

Agree on Thiem... a future winner perhaps but not this year.

Interesting observations on the serve position, will look out for that next time he's hits the court.

Ha you can hope but don't bet on it. Knowing him, he was already in Paris, figuring out all the sponsor obligations, meeting with his wife and son and settling in there. Bad weather and court conditions didn't help his mood at all but he will refocus, I am sure of that. He didn't look worried or concerned during the trophy presentation.

From his presser:

"Of course, you don't like to lose, but, you've got to congratulate the better player. Andy deserved to win," Djokovic said. “To compete with him in the long exchanges that we tend to have in our encounters required a lot of energy and a better performance from me, which didn't happen.

"Andy was the better player. He was the player who had the best form throughout this week. I think he's using the court better now [than in previous years]. He has more variety in his shots from the baseline.”

While Murray won all 10 sets played this week, Djokovic laboured to reach the final. The defending champion edged Stephane Robert 7-5, 7-5 in the second round, overcame a 0-6 first set against Thomaz Bellucci in the third round and needed a deciding tie-break to see off Kei Nishikori in the semi-finals.

“I had a long couple of weeks, especially the last couple of days. I knew it was going to be an uphill battle against Andy today,” Djokovic said. “I'm glad I managed to get to the final, because in a couple of matches I’ve had to come back from one-set deficits. All in all, it was very good two weeks after dropping out in Monte-Carlo early [against Jiri Vesely]. I needed this kind of results. I got what I was looking for, which is lot of matches.

“My confidence level is high because of the many matches that I have won this year on this surface and all the other surfaces, so I don't feel that I'm doubtful or that I'm shaken up by this loss."

I will hope for and bet on Novak to lose at this RG. Because of course I would. He can say all the right things, but the pressure is on, and it seems to be weighing on him. There are a lot more guys that might pick him off this year than last, which was nearly a clear path. We'll see how he handles the pressure.
