Obviously, I am rooting for Roger to win. But, this one is so close to call. He definitely has a better shot to win this than in recent past. Skipping Montreal is a master stroke of genius in scheduling. Fed is exactly where he wants to be. In perfect form, with 11 consecutive matches won and 28 consecutive sets won. More importantly, his serve is excellent at the moment.

However, Novak is the best returner in the game and he seems to have found his form too (even though I did not personally watch the match, but I keep hearing some ankle issue with Cilic and so may be Novak should not be given so much credit for the blow out). Further, USO courts surely play slower than Cincy or Dubai courts. But, I am not sure as to how USO courts compare to Wimbledon courts any more.

I cannot predict the winner, but can surely indulge in some predictions.

1. We will have good and interesting, but not a classic, match.

2. If the match goes to five sets, Novak will win it.

3. If the match is decided in three sets, Fed will win it.

4. Fed will indulge in SABR right in the first set, just like today to create some doubts in mind.

5. If the percentage of points that get decided on 5 or more shots is less than 50%, Fed will win it.

What is "sabering"? Is it when the return of serve is "half-volleyed"?

That's what they are calling it.Actually it is SABR .Sudden Attack By Roger.

Thanks!
Looks like Federer is, once again, wielding a light saber. The question is...Is he still the Sith Lord Darth Federer? Or is he now a Jedi Master? He hasn't been wearing all black, so I'm gonna go with the Jedi Master thing.

On the contrary, he is wearing all white this year.

Now Wilson just needs to make a new custom, limited edition US Open, racquet for Federer...Make it fluorescent green with light saber sound effects. That would be cool! Maybe call it the Wilson "Fedi Master Light SABR"?

"Sabr", blah, blah... even Roger himself in his post sf interview said that Max Mirnyi and Tim Henman used to return like that against his second serve back in the days but media hype does it again
He "invented the move"!? Yeah right

Finals prediction... Novak in 4/5 ;) Maybe even in 3 if he steps up hardly from the start.

They both have surprisingly easy semi win, especially for Fed. I couldn't remember Stan ever had such lopsided loss in late stage of slams. Ok, his samples pool is not as big as old BIG4.

Nole couldn't ask for a easier path to final. A couple of his final loss had a great deal with exhausting semi, 2013 Wimbledon & USO, 2015 RG. It will be interesting to see fresh Nole vs top-form Roger.

I hope they can go 4 or 5 sets.

I also think that Djokovic will nullify Federer's serve. Without the serve that gives him cheaper points, there will be nowhere to go for Roger. Djokovic in 4 sets.

I have not seen a point from either semi, so I will assume both are playing great.

I am afraid (as a Fed fan) the same story will take place on Sunday. Nole is just too solid for Roger, and he always shows up. For Roger to beat Nole, he has to seriously get in Nole's head and disrupt his game and his mind, whether through SABERING or whatever, and keep at it all match. And serve out of his mind.

I think a combination of Stan and Roger would be the ideal player to beat Nole . Roger could use some extra power against Nole.

I think Nole gets this in 4 or 5 and I hope I am wrong.

Someone good with Photoshop should make a photo of Fed wearing Stan's horrific shorts from RG with much bigger upper body and a slight podge belly like Stan and a puffy face with an insecure grin that stares up at his box every couple of seconds. That would scare the hell out of Novak :snicker

Does anyone know how the U.S. open surface compares to cinci? I know it's slower, but can anyone assess?

Who needs it more?

Roger Federer is in his 27th Grand Slam Final. He will be going for his 18th Grand Slam title, his first since 2012 Wimbledon. This is his 7th USO final, but his first since 2009 when del Potro ended his 5-year reign there. An 18th Slam would be huge, further cementing Federer's claim to the GOAT title.

Novak Djokovic is in his 16th Grand Slam Final. He will be going his 10th Grand Slam title, only the eighth player in the history of tennis to get to double digits. This is his 6th USO final but amazingly he is 1-4 in his first five. If he is going to be King of the Hard Courts instead of King of Down Under, he is going to have to win this one.

I don't think it's possible to "nullify" Roger's serve. What Novak will do is get enough returns back to make the old guy feel as though he needs to go for more... which usually results in more errors.

Why do you think it won't be a classic match?

On the one hand, I dread the thought of another Monday final... on the other hand it would be a fitting farewell to the roofless times.
For fed, it might actually be better to have the extra day and dry weather instead of fluffy, slower balls in wettish, humid conditions.

Roger needs it more. Nole has many years left whereas there probably aren't many chances left for Roger. On top of getting to 18, Roger is also going for an Open Era record 6 USO's. Also, this is actually Djokovic's 18th final.
