I am a big fan of del Potro, but judging from what I saw so far (which is not much), he can't handle a top 10 right now. In fact, maybe not even a top 20. He beat a top 20, that's true, but it was Fognini... anyone with half a forehand would devour his backhand, at least for now. Hope it changes soon, though.

To be fair the bottom of the top ten isn't that consistent either, but I agree he is not at that level yet, but he is TWO MATCHES BACK! Of course he isn't where he was a year ago but this is a great start.

Del Potro lost to KuKushkin (spelling?) in two tie-breakers in the QF.

It's a shame. It would have been cool to see him win the whole thing.

...course, I agree. I think three matches is literally just what the doctor ordered.

Apart from the wrist, anyone would be rusty, that's normal. But with some guys you always have some bigger expectation, rational or not.

But what I meant was specifically about his bh, that is, even if all else was back to normal (and fh looks nice, for example), his bh would be a huge liability. Again, I (and the rest of the world) expect it to get better, but I am must say I was a bit surprised with how soft it looks.

Tomic loses against Muller 6-7, 6-7. It was a really high quality match, with both players serving impeccably and hitting little UE's. Excellent match, even if it wasn't the best outcome.

Well said. And a great second set tiebreak won by Muller, 16-14. Shades of Borg v McEnroe at the Big W in 1980.

Delpo losing is acceptable at this point, but according to what he says, the wrist is hurting...that is the worrisome part. After all this time off, if he is still not pain free, it will effect not just his play, but his head as well. He will keep thinking about it with every backhand.

I was able to watch some of the match between Tomic v Muller.Tomic has never defeated Muller before.
It was evident to me in this match that Tomic needs more work in his volley play for starters,he has never been a good volley player at all, even in his junior days,I feel the coach has to be responsible in this area. Also his transition to the net needs work as well.Personally he I feel he needs a new coach,of course I know that wont happen in the immediate future, sad to say.Credit to Muller for making the s/final he deserved his win.

I thought Bernard vollied very well in this match. You make a good point re. 'transition to the net' however.

That is the case for most of the players on tour. They can hit all day long from the baseline and completely ignore the net play.
And you need that too if you want to be a complete top player.

Ya, I think (not hope or wish) that his career might be over. At least, we might have seen
the best of him already and he will never reach the 2009 USO level again.

Kukushkin defeats Mayer 6-4, 6-4 and
Troicki beats Muller 6-2, 6-4.
Apparently, this will be the first ATP Tour final to be disputed between two qualifiers.

Really? That's interesting. I'm pulling for Kukushkin. I admired his tenacity against Mayer.
