^ Not ever going to be effective against the big boys even if hit well. To be an effective approach shot against guys like Djokovic and Nadal you need to get them on the full run. Chip and charge gives them too much of a target and they will get to the ball with time to spare. Even the ones with decent depth usually won't get the job done.

Actually, Roger successfully executed chip and charge a few times against Novak in
Wimbledon final (see replay of first set in particular, that he won). But, I don't have the
stat of how many times he tried and how many times it worked. If it does not work
at least in 50% of attempts, one might say it is not a good idea; on the other hand,
it might actually help the overall game to mix it up.

I only remember it working 1 out of 6-7 times in Wimbledon final. I do agree that it is good to mix it up and that's the only reason to even occasionally try that play vs. Djokovic because % wise it is a losing play.

Much better imo to go for a wide mid pace serve with good placement (doesn't have to be super fast) that drags the opponent out wide, leaving the whole other side of the court open for an easy put away volley or just a plain old fashioned wallop into the empty space. Hope to see plenty of that from him at Cincy. He's gotta tidy up the volleying though, 'cos too often he does that play, gets the easy ball and botches the sitter of a volley.

Edit: I know we're talking about returns here but often on 2nd serves he's hit himself if he gets a short ball back he'll chip and charge too and that's suicidal Roddick style. I think the chip and charge idea would work a whole lot better if his approaches weren't so terrible a lot of time.

I tend to think chip and charge works the best when it is deep and smack in the middle of the court. Because now the opponent has to create an angle that does not exist, with a ball that does not bounce that high to get under for a big swing, and you as the volleyer do not have to worry about covering extreme angles . You just get as close to the net as possible, split step, forehand or backhand volley (Or an overhead of course).

Even then guys like Rafa can punish you with serious top spin.

Kyrgios gets broken again, breaks a racket as well...That's what I don't get with youngsters. He is acting as if he eats guys like Murray for breakfast every day and twice on Sundays. What is SUPPOSED to happen is happening, so relax, keep it together, control yourself...

On the other hand, he is still a teenager....

Rock solid from Andy, good signs that he can be a contender in these coming tournaments if he can keep this level up. That has been the problem though because he's been playing some of his best tennis since Rome then failing to turn up when he comes up against another top tenner. Looking very sharp out there today though.

Kyrgios fell apart a bit and this will bring him crashing down to earth. He showed decent signs of quality at times but bad shot choices and failing to adapt to an opponent like Murray have left him on the end of a heavy defeat. He will learn a lot from this though and he'll be grateful for the lessons learnt down the line.

Ah, I thought that match would be on later. Good win for Andy, and a harsh lesson for Nick...

Different matches, different circumstances.

But still, a good result for Andy. From the sounds of it, he must have been sharp...

Well exactly. There isn't a more thick-headed, chest-pumping demographic than the 16-21 year old male. Add in a "American" and it only gets worse

Let's see. Nadal is 23-10 vs Federer but 4-5 vs. Davydenko. Meanwhile, Roger is 19-2 against Davydenko. Hmm, something doesn't add up...

(The point being, each context and match-up is different)

Was expecting possible rain and later starts for some matches so I missed Murray v Kyrgios but seems it was a boring one sided affair. Hopefully Djokovic v Monfils will be good. Pretty sure it'll be more entertaining than Karlovic v Gasquet anyway!

I think more than h2h it's more Murray just finding his better tennis game again.Odd's are Murray will be higher up the rankings after the USA swing.

Why I say Nole & Dimitrov, this is where Andy can sharpen his game for USO.

^ ZZZZzzzzzz. I didn't watch it but read on other forums, they said Murray served well but Kyrgios played poorly. It's not all about mighty Murray.
