Garbine need to learn to play with more controlled aggression on her shots, she is a player that goes for her shots,a reason why her ufe is often high.
There is a new breed of players out there, all new, their approach to the game seems ruthless, they are aggressive to the max and they don't wait for anything to develop, almost careless if one goes by the old standards. This group does not wait for opportunity, they take shots, even if it seems far fetched, they try it. This phenom is evolving and it seems, the risks are going upwards.
No doubt in my mind, this is the fruit of power tennis, it's now pushing the extreme, mainly caused by such pioneers as Davenport, Carpriatti and the Williams sisters.
Even some players that didn't play this style are switching over. Great example would be Carla against Caro, I have never seen Carla play such risky game, she must have rubbed against Mugu.
Mugu is one of them, but there are many and the ranks are growing, Camilla Goergi, Sabine Lisicki, Caroline Garcia, Coco Vandeweghe are some examples, to lesser degree I will name Kvitova and Cibulkova.
The margins these players attempt are very small, hence the possibility of missing a bunch and giving a set away quickly, great example is Petra.
But watch out, if this style is perfected and executed efficiently, who can stop a player doing it?
I still remember the 6-1 6-1 scores Petra handed Marion Bartolli a couple of years ago, in that match Petra executed this strategy to perfection, No ONE could stop her that day.
I am not convinced it's a great breed, for me there's just too much of a risk factor playing such style, the players who do it miss most of the time and lose. It's just too risky.
Don't get me wrong, I like Petra, Garbie and Sabine, they are some of my favorites. I can't help but admire players with such talent and potential.
