With the way things are going, Li could have possibly won this event even with a bad knee.

I have become a Carla fan. What other small player can hit 46 winners in a match?

With Serena out, Woz has a great chance of taking the title.

Well what a match Barthel and Genie just had and Genie had major problems against Mona but she managed.

Genie really needs a string of toughing it out wins and perhaps a title to bring that confidence back up.

Happy to see your girl doing well again Hoergren. You've been so consistent in your support for her way back to the Tennis.com days.

Sad to see Ana retire. Must be too exhausted. I expect more upsets than usual as the season nears the end. I think Serena will survive Cornet this time.

Serena will be out for blood in this one. Cornet has beaten her twice this year.

Not a good beginning for the Williams sisters in Wuhan, both lost first matches. One limped away from the court. Not good at all.

List of injured:
A. Ivanovic - Left thigh injury
D. Cibulkova - Left ankle injury
J. Jankovic - Left lumbar spine injury
S. Williams - Viral illness
S. Xu - Heat illness

Note that second round is now complete. Round of sixteen to begin.

So, Cornet has 3 wins over Serena in a season, and Maria can't get 3 in 10 years.

Who would have thought it??
those wins are meaningless in the scheme of things...especially today when Serena was leading...she will lose soon as always.
I hope Serena plays in Beijing, that court suits her game and has won there twice.Wuhan is for all the players who didnt do well on the summer hardcourts.

Victories are not meaningless, especially 3 successive win against the best player in the world.

Fact is, it helps the other players confidence immensely, and very often has a baring on how the "lesser" player approaches future match up with the player they've defeated in the past.

I was a bit surprised that Makarova lost to Bascinszky,Makarova has been in solid form all year, though Timea has been playing well, though I cant see her defeating Sharapova.

Let me clear that up for you: Halep is the best because she beat Niculescu in the semis in Bucharest, who bageled Cornet in the final in Guangzhou, who beat Serena 3 times this year, who won 18 Slams.

I am happy Serena withdrew because she needs some rest before the YEC..as for Cornet let her enjoy her win over Rena and hope she goes on to win the event..

Kvitova v Pliskova...these two fellow Czech player's haven't met before.
Pliskova has been playing some of her best tennis of late, she could crack the Top 30.
Both ladies are big server's and big hitter's of the ball. The conditions at Wuhan are not ideal for Kvitova who suffers from asthma.A upset loss could be on the cards here.Kvitova still has a good opportunity to have a good deep run at Wuhan,if she defeat's her fellow Czech player.

Garbine need to learn to play with more controlled aggression on her shots, she is a player that goes for her shots,a reason why her ufe is often high.

There is a new breed of players out there, all new, their approach to the game seems ruthless, they are aggressive to the max and they don't wait for anything to develop, almost careless if one goes by the old standards. This group does not wait for opportunity, they take shots, even if it seems far fetched, they try it. This phenom is evolving and it seems, the risks are going upwards.
No doubt in my mind, this is the fruit of power tennis, it's now pushing the extreme, mainly caused by such pioneers as Davenport, Carpriatti and the Williams sisters.

Even some players that didn't play this style are switching over. Great example would be Carla against Caro, I have never seen Carla play such risky game, she must have rubbed against Mugu.

Mugu is one of them, but there are many and the ranks are growing, Camilla Goergi, Sabine Lisicki, Caroline Garcia, Coco Vandeweghe are some examples, to lesser degree I will name Kvitova and Cibulkova.
The margins these players attempt are very small, hence the possibility of missing a bunch and giving a set away quickly, great example is Petra.

But watch out, if this style is perfected and executed efficiently, who can stop a player doing it?
I still remember the 6-1 6-1 scores Petra handed Marion Bartolli a couple of years ago, in that match Petra executed this strategy to perfection, No ONE could stop her that day.

I am not convinced it's a great breed, for me there's just too much of a risk factor playing such style, the players who do it miss most of the time and lose. It's just too risky.

Don't get me wrong, I like Petra, Garbie and Sabine, they are some of my favorites. I can't help but admire players with such talent and potential.

Excuse me. You were doing great in that post until you said the above.
To put the Williams sisters at the end of this list is really really bad.
No one brought power to the game more than the Williams sisters.
To claim that Davenport and Carpriatti had the same power as the Williams sisters is very wrong and weird.
The Williams sisters brought the power to the game and no one else did it more than them.
I am a bit amazed about what you said here. The list of your names is very strange.

P.S. You forgot your screamer. Was it something I said? ;) Dont pay attention to me.

In my mind, players like Serena, Masha and Ana play with controlled aggression like mentioned although Masha is a breed of her own.
There are other players that have no such boundaries, they take their shots, they don't construct points, they go for it.
The other day Mugu got 50 winners and 53 UE in a match, this match had 204 points total. This means Garbine attempted to go for it every other point, including return points.
Such players are not trained to construct points, they go for it.
