Congrats to the Swiss team. :clap :celeb:

I wasn't able to see the match (I DVR'ed it to watch later), but the score looks straightforward. Apparently Gasquet wasn't up for the challenge, and Federer was able to get his back in shape and execute his game.

Does this mean Clement's days are numbered as the French DC captain? They won one match, against a Roger with a dodgy back, and arguably didn't assemble the best team (especially doubles).

Congratulations to the Switzerland Team and especially to Roger and Stan for getting the job done. :clap:celeb:

Ending the year on a high note will certainly augur well for the coming year for both of them.

Also, good job Captain Luthi for fielding the right team in the doubles and for hiring
Macpherson (the coach of Bryan Brothers as a consultant coach for the doubles match which
proved to be crucial).

I think France's selction of the city and the selection of the surface of indoor clay were actually good choices. In hindsight, France would have been better off if they have

1. included Rojer-Vasselin in the team instead of Richard Gasquet. That would have maintained
the RG winning team for the doubles match. Instead they played doubles with the Benneteau
and Gasquet combo who have not played together at all this year. Also, apparently Benneteau
was forced to play from the Ad side while he usually plays from the Deuce side. Winning
the doubles match could have changed the end result.

2. With the given team, it would have been better to use Benneteau to substitute for Tsonga
(not that it would have made a difference in the end result). Benneteau is known to cause
some trouble for Fed at least.

Actually, Simon would not be a good choice vs. Federer on clay (a better choice than Gasquet, maybe, but it's ludicrous to suggest he WOULD have won). The match-up has troubled Federer outside of clay, but Simon's counter-punching and flat hitting isn't as effective on clay. He'll just end up doing a lot of defending, being moved around, and being forced to track down drop shots all day. Not exactly a fun proposition. You need to hit through Federer on clay or move him around. Simon would have done neither.

PS: The hell does Rafa have anything to do with this?

It is fun to read my OP of this thread written on 13th Nov 2013 wondering about the possibility of Swiss Blokes doing it this time.

Stupid Record Alert:

Fed is now 50-17 in Davis Cup matches. With his cup clinching win today, he becomes the Swiss with most DC wins overtaking Jakob Hlasek who had the previous record of 49-30 in DC matches for the Swiss.

Congratulations to the Swiss team,in my humble opinion they clinched the series when Roger and Stan won the doubles,Roger had a huge advantage going into his singles match against Gasquet.
Overall the Swiss team deserved their victory, they were the better team,a well earned victory.

Fed leads in both matches played and matches won this year with a record of 73-12.
He comes in second in percentage of matches won, the first being Novak.

Next year, the Swiss have a good chance to repeat their DC victory. Their first round opponent
is Belgium (Goffin and nobody else), projected quarterfinal opponent is mildly formidable Canada (Milos, Vasek and Nestor). Major bottleneck will be Serbia (Novak, Troiki, Tipsy and Zimonjic) in SF. The final will be against a respectable, but not a winning team such as France.

Note that Spain is out of world group and so Spain cannot cause any trouble for the Swiss in next year's DC ties.

OCO, we've gone from a final "in doubt" due to soap opera and injury with Federer to them successfully defending! I can't handle it! :cover :eyepop :nono :puzzled :dodgy:

Simon sucks on clay. He'd have had no prayer

???? Since when? I guess you have no clue how many titles he has on clay. His biggest title is actually Hamburg and he has 5 titles on dirt out of 11 in total.

^ That surprises me that he has won that many on clay, but how far has he gone at RG or other big clay events? Has he beaten anyone good on clay? Maybe he has, but no big results that I remember.

Regardless his only wins vs. Roger were on fast hard courts in 2008. He is 2-0 vs. Simon on clay whereas he has lost twice on clay to Gasquet. It was a crappy situation for France as Tsonga would have been their best hope even on clay vs. Roger.
