I guess Williams Sisters fans with a different point of view aren't welcomed here. We're called sycophants and it's accepted??

You damn right I'm upset about it!!

ALL opinions are welcome on these boards, as long as they're expressed in an appropriate manner. Name-calling and other forms of denigration are not allowed.

It is possible for people to disagree without launching into personal insults and attacks. Anything else just makes everyone angry and miserable, so let's not go there.

Thanks.

Serena must prefer her dull gray & mauve outfit for the doubles than that gawdy wallpaper thingy Venus has on. Good for you Serena. I would not be caught dead in that either!

I think Li will be her 1st physical challenge, Sloane being the first mental challenge. It will be a tight three setter I think

We will see with Serena; I can't tell as I can't watch the match at the moment. If Serena is the one serving her second serve in the 70's and low 80's, then she will have a difficult time for the rest of the tournament.

Since we're on commentators.. Last night, why did Mary Jo say Serena was 18 when she won her first Slam?? MaryJo knows damn well Serena was 17!! I could really slap her!!

Oh, good grief. Nothing every single thing is a slight against Serena. I've heard various commentators on numerous occasions mess things up. Not that long ago, Patrick McEnroe messed up the number Slams Federer has won. Would you have wanted to slap McEnroe, too?

These people are human; they're not perfect. They forget things, and they mis-speak amid trying to cover dozens and dozens of players, playing dozens and dozens of matches.

Yeah, right!!

McEnroe isn't his Davis Cup Captain. Mary Jo, FedCup Captain, knows EXACTLY how old Serena was .. the same damn age as her fav Sharapova, 17!!

She might fool you, but the bubblehead can't fool me!!

What does Davis Cup/FedCup Captain have to do with it? It's Patrick McEnroe's job to know such statistics and facts. Besides, it's a much more simple question than how old someone was over a decade ago.

Do you think McEnroe -- a former Davis Cup captain -- could tell you how old every player he ever coached was when each person won various tournaments, and do so on live TV in a split second? Of course not.

If someone asked you how many slams Federer has won, couldn't you answer that question? And if you messed it up, do you think someone should then presume you have a vendetta against Roger? Of course not. It's common knowledge among tennis fans, but you simply made a mistake.

McEnroe is getting paid an awful lot of money to do this on live TV, as is Fernandez. They're not perfect. They make mistakes. Everyone does. I do. You do. You can't remember and recall every statistic and every fact instantly, and be able to come up with all of that information in a split second on live TV. It's unrealistic to think otherwise.

People read way too much into commentary. They are there to comment on the good and bad. Now I will admit if you don't know a fact, you shouldn't just throw random things out there. You do have a bunch of fact checkers at your disposal. Also, I am betting a smartphone to look up the information. I mean if all commentators had to say were positive things about Serena's game, then that would be boring. Serena always has things she can improve on with her game or records to be adjusted. Negative commentary isn't always from a negative place, but in Chris Evert's case she has more often than not been pro-Serena wanting her to succeed. Chris has been very vocal about hoping Serena achieves more slams than she does. I think Chris is like some Serena fans in that she wonders like the rest of us why Serena is throwing in a sloppy game here and there. Why did she just drop serve? I think Chris' criticism comes from a good place in wanting the best for Serena. Most commentators want the best for Serena and to see her apply herself and use her gifts to the best of her ability. The only person I have seen consistent malice from is Mary Carillo.

And they sometimes simply misspeak, as was -- without question -- the case with Patrick McEnroe messing up the number of slams Federer has won. He didn't throw out a random number because he couldn't remember the correct one. It was an innocent mistake. If any Federer fan was offended, or thought McEnroe was trying to denigrate him, they were being ridiculous.

I mean if all commentators had to say were positive things about Serena's game, then that would be boring. Serena always has things she can improve on with her game or records to be adjusted. Negative commentary isn't always from a negative place ...

Exactly. Once again, I'll use Federer as an example, as another famous top player with millions of fans, just like Serena.

Every single time Federer plays, the commentators will say what his opponent needs to do in order to beat Roger. This is their job as commentators and analysts. Therefore, when his opponent comes up with a great shot, or breaks Federer's serve, or wins a set, the commentators will commend him for executing the right tactics to beat Roger. Conversely, when Roger is winning, and doing the right things, the commentators will say so, too. Interpreting any of this as being pro-Federer or anti-Federer is completely wrong, as is the case with the commentators when analyzing Serena matches.

They're not working for the Federer Sports Channel or the Serena Sports Channel. They're working for ESPN, CBS, the Tennis Channel, etc., so they discuss both sides.

You know I just did the math and if Serena wins the US Open that would put her singles prize money earned at over $9 million earned in prize money. She could easily be the first woman to collect over $10 million in prize money depending on the rest of the year. That would be a nice record.

The network has people there whose job is to look up

stats and give them to the announcers so they don't

mess up. They are given fact sheets with all the stats

they may need. And if one is not there all they have to

do is ask someone to look it up.

Do you think these announcers spout off all those Stats

they give us from memory?

Yep. She has over $5.4 m now and $3.6 would do it

It would also put her over $50 mil for career.

Earlier in the tourny Pam made a mistake on the number

of GS double titles Serena and Venus have. Later Fowler

was also talking about them and he corrected Pam. Guess

what. He was wrong also. There was no excuse for that

He had plenty of time to get the correct answer. If they

don't know something you don't just blurt out a number

you think is right. You find out to give the audience correct info.

That's his job. Pam was on the court interviewing Serena, maybe

a pass. Fowler, 20 min later, in the booth. no excuse.

Tossip and Djmm.. try to give this a 2nd read.. its pretty spot on .. There isn't a big Serena fan on these boards than I. Heck.. at times I have more confidence in Serena than Rafa,, you know that is a statement coming from me since my next born will probably be named Rafa. Chris is a bigger supporter than anyone and I totally endorsed this poster's view on her constructive criticism.
