[Fewer than 1000 points between Nole and Rafa now. I don't see how Rafa doesn't take it in the next few weeks. They're both scheduled for Shanghai, and Novak is defending the title. If not there, then the next, right?

fewer than 1000? it's barely over 100 :)
basically, the moment Rafa wins another tennis match between now and February 2014, he's #1.

Djokovic is currently 120 points ahead of Nadal. Both are scheduled to play Davis Cup. Nole can gain up to 140 additional points if he wins two matches for Serbia (2x70) in the semis vs. Canada on Indoor Clay in Belgrade, so he probably won't have to play two matches. Meanwhile Nadal plays for Spain vs. Ukraine in the playoff round where a win is awarded with 15 points and therefore in Nadal's case won't count for his ranking anyway. So Nadal can realistically overtake Nole (defending champion) in Beijing where he will add 150p to his tally at the very least, either by making the semis (150) or losing earlier and therefore re-activating 150p from his final appearence in Viña del Mar earlier this year. If he makes the final (300) in Beijing, he's the new #1 by October, the 7th. But as johnsteinbeck already pointed out, that's just a matter of time. The year end #1 is pretty much wrapped up.

Totally got that one wrong. I thought I knew they'd be within 120 points, but I mis-read the live rankings, and didn't want to over-rate Rafa. Anyway, the #1 is inevitable, for sure.

It was tempting to want Wawrinka in the final (thereby giving Nadal the #1 ranking), but it was more important for Nadal to beat Djokovic again at the US Open than to re-own the throne.

Its very annoying to hear the media refer to Djokovic as World Number One at the start of every report. Hope I don't have to hear that ever again once Nadal re-owns the throne. Nadal can gain points in 2014 at Australia, Miami, Monte Carlo, Wimbledon, so I like Nadal's chances of keeping the top ranking for the entirety of 2014. He won't need to defend everything.

Plus I think Murray is better than Djokovic on hardcourt and grass now, so it won't be easy for Djokovic to challenge Nadal's throne in future. It also won't be easy for Murray to challenge Nadal's throne, ever, considering Murray isn't making progress on clay (and considering Murray hasn't beaten Nadal at a slam since 2010 AO).

I still think Murray needs to show more (a lot more, in fact) to be considered better than Djokovic on hards...

the latest world rank charts are on the atp site (enlarged top 10 is anyway.)

djokovic has a 260 pt lead ahead of nadal (thanks to his 140 pts 2 single wins in dc)

unexpectedly Federer is back up to world no5 rank ahead of burdych, burdych only had a tiny lead before I think he prob lost 70 pts as either one of his davic cup wins wasn't 'live or maybe he didn't even play in it.

Thanks for the update, JLLB. Looks like there is room for volatility in the bottom 6 of the top 10 through the end of the year.

It looks bizarre when you see read Djokovic and "Number One" in the same sentence. I know its the system, but really bizarre, considering Nadal has won 10 titles since March, and Djokovic has won....1?

Djokovic had a huge points advantage all year long so it's taken till now for Nadal to catch up to him.

I know, its fair/justified according to the ranking system (and was bound to take a while, after Nadal wisely took several months off). Its still funny to see on paper. Hopefully in a few years when someone from the next generation takes over from Nadal, there will be a few months where Nadal is also the "paper #1".

And you've expressed in more than one thread that it bothers you when commentators make note of it. However, as you say, it IS the system. Until Nadal passes him, Djokovic is the world #1.

someone on Wikipedia goofed..i got this info off atp list of world no 1 rank players. last week it had djokovic on 99wks at no1..so I put 100wks for sept 16th BUT..

on wiki this week he is still on 99wks ..and there have been 'goings on' to the revision, so I don't know if it was wrong saying 99wks last week and is now right..or if it really should say 100wks and not still 99.

I cant be altering the stats above as it could still be right, but it alters weather djokovic can catch rafas 102 wks a bit before rafa begins to dominate.

I'm sure we'll sort it out. But likely Novak passes Rafa, as to weeks at #1, just before Rafa passes him again, right? Blah, blah. The question is: whether or not there will be weather...;)

(I'm teasing you, JLLB, because you're rarely so earnest.)

Tennis will become a more popular sport when Nadal regains #1. The TV commercials and magazine ads promoting the masters events won't have Djokovic in the middle. After Nadal regains #1, people will see Nadal in the middle and they'll recognize the familiar face and remain interested. Before they probably saw Djokovic and thought "whatever....". Tennis is about to make a comeback, thanks to the mother of all comebacks.

It's funny because the most marketable guy is Federer.

not so fast......there is a large Spanish speaking audience, the world doesn't revolve around English or French. People who are no fan of tennis recognize Rafa...hate him or like him, he is more "noisy"

How is Federer even relevant to this anyway..... He can't win anymore. Either Nadal or Djokovic is going to be #1. And tennis is better off with Nadal at #1 if you ask me.

If Federer rediscovers his form for indoor season (and he might as it's his best surface and he's surely out to prove a point and end this year on a high to start 2014 well), you may end up eating those words. Loopy FH topspin to one handed backhand does not work on the indoor courts and Roger won't be one bit intimidated if he's playing well. Last time they played at the WTF it was 6-3 6-0.

Yeah but Nadal took a set from Federer in the final of the 2010 World Tour Finals (and that was after Nadal survived a marathon with Murray in the semis, and beat Djokovic before that). Nadal was a better server in 2010 but Nadal is a better hardcourt baseliner right now than he was in 2010. Federer is in for hell if they meet at the World Tour Finals. Federer's last refuge, may be no more. I still don't see how Federer is relevant to the #1 ranking.
