Denisovich said:On the Masters: 2 of them are equal to one GS? You got to be kidding me. Even a 100 Masters titles do not equal one GS. It's a whole different ballgame. Ask Caroline Wozniacki. Essentially, if Nadal doesn't win this US Open, he Wozniackied himself to world no 1 IF he makes it.... kidding, it's impressive that he won so many masters this year, but you need to deliver when it counts, at the GS.
Denis, I believe you got Moxie wrong here. She wasn't saying or implying that 2 masters titles equal a slam victory in terms of value/degree of achievement, just that you are being awarded the same amount of points - 2000p. That's why Nadal so far is head and shoulders above the rest in the race for London despite having two zero pointer for Melbourne and Wimbledon because he amassed 7000p alone by winning 5 masters shields and Paris.
I agree with the general view though that the best grand slam player of any season should be seen as the player of that year but this season I feel it is a bit different which makes it a special season. Djokovic has been just dreadful in masters events, reaching just 1 final in seven so far which is very poor. In case Nadal doesn't win the US Open and still ends up being the year end #1 then I would still say that he's been the best overall. We are not talking about Wozniacki here.
I doubt that a 12 time major champion should apologize for finishing the year as the best just because the rest of the pack were nowhere near as consistent throughout the entire season. Points don't lie, especially when it comes to Nadal who so far in his career has performed much much better on the grand slam stage than Nole and Andy combined. Both entered a lot of masters this season totally half-arsed and without any real desire to win it. I don't think such a behavior should be applauded, let alone awarded with the year end trophy. It is indeed important to pace yourself throughout a season, I get this, but they crossed the line on many occasions this season.
