andy murray must be laughing all the way to the ice-bath, Federer, Tsonga, cilic all out..

when does he get to play anyone a bit scary..presuming no more all time shocks like with fed n rafa/wafa.

I think Andy will be taking it one match at a time. Next up is Robredo.

Robredo isn't scary...murray could beat him wearing a pair of these >> :snigger

After what happened on day 3 I'm not getting carried away. Still a lot of tennis to be played.

Let's see what day 4 brings.

I don't think anyone's taking anything for granted at this point. And that's not hubris, it's self-preservation. This is the wackiest Wimbledon in memory, with near-literal and figurative banana skins all over those courts. This may be the most survival-of-the-fittest Slam in years, and we're only 3 days in. :puzzled

London, UK: “There has been a high number of withdrawals at The Championships today and we sympathise with all the players affected. The withdrawals have occurred for a variety of reasons, but there has been some suggestion that the court surface is to blame. We have no reason to think this is the case. Indeed, many players have complimented us on the very good condition of the courts.

“The court preparation has been to exactly the same meticulous standard as in previous years and it is well known that grass surfaces tend to be more lush at the start of an event. The factual evidence, which is independently checked, is that the courts are almost identical to last year, as dry and firm as they should be, and we expect them to continue to play to their usual high quality.”

^ I'm not sure what to say about that, or if I think they're wrong, but see this from our news feed:

http://www.tennisfrontier.com/news/atp-tennis/federer-out-of-wimbledon-2nd-round-shocker/

3 of the 7 retirement/walk-overs specifically cited injuries suffered either during their matches today or Monday. Federer, to his credit, said he never slipped.

Generally speaking, from the get-go this slam was going to be different. Why?
This is the first time ever in a slam that Djokovic-Murray are seeded 1-2.

Now, after 3 days in, the other main favorites got out, they are still in. So, the signs were alreaady there, although not many people noticed.
Maybe the lower ranked players knowing Roger/Rafa are not the top guys anymore, have a better chance against them. They definitely try as we saw it.
Both Darcis and Stakhovsky had a plan and belief. And it workedin both cases.

Worse than Madrid's blue clay? Maybe Kentucky (The Blue Grass State) should host a grass-court tourney. The worst of both worlds.

didn't bother to read this thread.....but I bet the low bouncing grass and the opponent playing top 10 tennis was the reason :snigger

Oh, come on, Herios. By this logic, Djokovic and Murray should have been going out in early rounds on a regular basis, and Rafa should have lost at RG.

this makes it that much harder for fed to win unfortunately. he'll most probs be seeded 5th or below and might have to go three all of top 3 to win. i dont see that happening anytime soon. hate to say it but his slam days might be over. doesnt matter what kind of draw he gets

I think this is more predictable than anyone admits. Federer's level has been dropping consistently since last year's Wimbledon. The push to win another slam ended. If you look at especially the last half of this year he's been pushed to 3 sets way too many times (in lower events) to be comfortable with. He was consistently getting pushed by players way below his level.

By the way, some people will think the loss of Fedal against such low-rankers is a sign that this will be a bad tournament: it isn't. It's a sign of good health returning to the lower ranked players. For too long we've waited for fellas to push the way these guys did - all the way to the finish line...
Rosol effect. Enter in the court thinking you can win it. Also, even better, all the world watching you playing a legend in his backyard, you have nothing to lose, just go for it.

It is very much this: that a player comes in with nothing to lose against a super-star. They'll throw everything at it. And I'm very much in Kieran's camp of admiring the grit. It's disappointing when they don't capitalize. Rosol lost in the next round last year, (though he has risen in the ranks, over the last year.) Darcis gave the walkover after beating Rafa, which was disappointing. Stakhovsky is not an unknown, just a journeyman. We'll see what he does with his win over Roger. TBD.

The man who really capitalized on his giant-killer status was Soderling. His win over Nadal at the French changed his career. It's one thing to take down a presumptive legend, on the day, but it's another to change your career over it. I'll be interested to see which players are brave enough to change their careers, after such a volatile Wimbledon.

I fairness, Soderling highly ranked then, was he? But yeah, there should have been a lot more shocks over the years. It seemed players folded at the first sign of resistance by a higher ranked player. And not just journeymen, either. A bit of spite is the missing ingredient, ambition, and to play - as Herios put it - as if you have nothing to lose...

Although it is true that they have nothing to lose and throw everything at it, there comes a point where they realise that they are about to pull of an enormous stunt. And subsequently fold their cards. When they don't fold, what makes these wins by Starkhovsky, Rosol and Darcis truly admirable. I think there is a big distinction there.

Embarrassed? Hardly. Anything Fed does here on in is just gravy on a great career. I'd rather seem him play and lose a match here and there, than not play at all.

Who do you follow again? David Nalbandian?

Isabelle follows a number of the French players, and faithfully keeps us informed when she hears tidbits of news from her end of the sphere. She's not a fan of fedal, and continues to opine, no matter the reaction. :)

I'm not a fan of Fedal either, Federer only. Isabelle is more than entitled to "opine" as are people to respond. No embarrassment here about Federer.
