By the way, some people will think the loss of Fedal against such low-rankers is a sign that this will be a bad tournament: it isn't. It's a sign of good health returning to the lower ranked players. For too long we've waited for fellas to push the way these guys did - all the way to the finish line...
Rosol effect. Enter in the court thinking you can win it. Also, even better, all the world watching you playing a legend in his backyard, you have nothing to lose, just go for it.

I don't agree it's a Rosol effect. He wasn't the first lower-ranked player to play w/ confidence and knock out a top player in a slam.

Anyone crunch the numbers yet on how this affects Rogers ranking? Pretty bad, I imagine...

his rank is going right down the toilet :s..what do they get for a 2nd rd ?? 45 pts ?,

he lost 1'900 rank pts roughly so he will be out of the top 4..exactly a year after regaining world no1 rank. :puzzled

it's not as drastic yet as one would imagine based just on the wimby points. he'll drop straight to #5 for sure. Berd has to make the final to overtake him and put him to 6. JMDP can't catch him right now.

however, the Olympic points will hurt, and if JMDP and Berd make it far-ish, i reckon they could both overtake him and put him at #7.

This was a great match. I thought Roger played pretty well and it was more about how good the other player was.

I am actually not even sure if he would have necessarily won during his prime either. Playing S/V guys can be tough if you aren't used to it, and Federer hasn't really played a good one in a while. The accuracy of his returns (which used to bother so many S/Vers back in the day) was a tiny bit off and thats all it takes.

But I mean, Federer played some really clutch points. The breakpoint that he lost in the fourth set was a perfect play. Roger pelted a cc bh at like 95 mph in a perfect spot and Stak not only anticipated where it was going, but got a racket on it and hit a winner. So kudos, well deserved.

Roger gooes down to 5th for now. Rafa moves up to 4 and lo and behold, David Ferrer moves up to a creeer high #3

Its not just the ranking but the points. He was defending 2000 points and only made back 10 - that's a loss of 1990.

You can find live rankings here: http://live-tennis.eu/

Roger's over 1000 points behind Rafa now in 5th place. It looks like Djokovic's #1 is safe for the entire year, and Murray can probably relax into the year-end #2 ranking, assuming he doesn't tank either Wimbledon or the US Open. Ferrer and Nadal will duke it out for 3rd place and it may come down to how healthy Nadal is.

As for Roger, he SHOULD be able to hold #5 for the year, but you never know - Berdych and/or Del Potro could catch him. My guess is that he finishes in the #5-8 range.

Watching Stak interview...such a nice dude too.

Very nice guy. Smart and thoughtful too. One of those players I always hoped would break through and have some big wins. Awesome that he will be remembered as the guy who sent Fed home before the quarters of a major... and Wimbledon no less!

My thoughts too. You know the streak has to end at some time, and it better be done by someone you like.

What exactly does Fed mean when he says "I still have plans to play for many more years to come,....", as he did after the match? He surely cannot mean what he says. Does he say that for business/contractual reasons? Sure he can stay in the top 10 if he wants to for a couple of years but will it add anything more to his career apart from money? Doesn't look like he is that hungry for another major either. Just wondering what's going through his mind...

RE: yup. that one DEFINITELY happened.

^^ I doubt it. He is trailing Murray 600 points in the race to London and Ferrer 1600 points, who are both still here to grab quite some points. I doubt his indoor season (WTF included) will be able to compensate for that, especially since he will need to beat the top guys.

The great news is that Nole will stay No1e for a while now with Rafa not being able to get some points in at at least two slams (AO Wimbledon). And Roger is out of that story now officially.

Unless Rafa badly injured himself, he has no points to defend for the rest of this year. I expect to see him remain in the hunt.

People have been bemoaning (or celebrating depending on which camp you're in) Roger's demise for a few years. For slams he may need a little luck with the draw to win, but he will be dangerous at the Masters for quite some time. I think he stays in the top four this year.

I think he'll be 5th, but 4 will be very difficult. I know he can be still dangerous in masters as you say, but for the next few he will be seeded 5th if all players will go.
The story will be the same, he could be meeting a top 4 in the QF, like Rafa had to do. And Roger won't be quite a sure bet to muscle through like Rafa was able on clay.

First time since 2002 that one of the two won't play the final at Wimbledon.

Federer always said he just like playing tennis and competing,

he is like jimmy Connors..he just wants to play tennis no matter what.

Interesting fact. And Djokovic is the only one to have won it other than them since then.
