At some point it was going to happen and this is that point. Nothing lasts forever. A hot player, sub par Roger, there you go...Stak deserves all the credit.

I am not sure what this means for Roger...

Sampras retired some time later after losing in R2 , I feel the same will happen to Roger

Not his age at all. Stakhovsky, played an incredible match.
Who would have thought that Federer and Nadal go out to players ranked 116 and 135 respectively, at the same event in the first week of a slam.

RE: yup. that one DEFINITELY happened.

dunno either. if he doesn't right the ship very soon, he'll have to fight to even qualify for London. without London, he'll drop well out of the top 10. i know i'm getting ahead of myself, but it's not that far off.

i hope Murray realizes that it's the chance of a lifetime for him, the chance of the century for GB at the championships.

on second though, i hope he DOESN'T realize it, and just keeps on playing good tennis ;)

Federer had to lose early sometime after 9 years of QF.

to quote from another thread:

Roger couldn't ask for better opportunities these last 2 slams and he has played horrible. I think it's the end of the road for him sadly.
i think that's a big factor here. Fed used to thrive like no other when opportunity arose, and now he isn't. that's a huge difference, for sure.

i too wonder what's in the cards for Rog now. one thing's for sure, while he's been sugarcoating his 2013 results so far, he probably got the memo now. either re-work the whole thing, or let it be. or play odd 250s.

When Sod beat Rafa, Fed played nervous and almost lost to Haas

When Rosol beat Rafa, Fed played nervous and almost lost to Benn.

When Darcis beat Rafa, Fed played nervous and this time it caught up to him.

My point is when Rafa got upset early, Roger knew his chances increased exponentially and had a hard time the next match staying calm. It's almost like his focus shifted to the finish line instead of the opponent at hand.

Call it coincidence, but I couldn't help but think about the Haas and Benn matches going into this one.

With that said give credit to Stakhovsky who took advantage.

not at all? so you're telling me that this performance by Stak would've been good enough against a 23-28 year old Fed? if you say so.

mind you, Stak played AMAZING. i loved it. but you might want to check out some of the break points Fed wasted, for once. or compare his ROS to earlier years.. .or or or or...

wow I thought Federer might be in trouble even when he won the first set..way too many shanks and he even missed easy forehands when he had bps on serve-insky..

whats the fedster gonna do..play Newport ? :puzzled..

i don't think it's coincidence... but the big difference is that in the past, Fed hung tough. Sergiy was a big difference, but so was Fed.

god, that'd be awesome. ask for a WC, play Newport, S&V all the way. and then leave his racquet right there at the HoF.

RE: yup. that one DEFINITELY happened.

Federer has had a great run, the guy's a legend and these things happen, no shame there.

But did anyone else relish Stak's nerve and willingness to play S&V tennis? Sometimes it was like watching Pete, he was that great. Who says you can't play serve volley today on grass? Who? This guy was immense when the pressure was on. Kudos to him, he earned it, just like Darcis great performance against Rafa.

By the way, some people will think the loss of Fedal against such low-rankers is a sign that this will be a bad tournament: it isn't. It's a sign of good health returning to the lower ranked players. For too long we've waited for fellas to push the way these guys did - all the way to the finish line...

RE: yup. that one DEFINITELY happened.

You know when you think you hear something but you're not sure, like a tiny little sound in the distance that you might be making up?

Well I hear it now:

fat+lady+sings.jpg

I don't mean to make light of this because I love Roger and like Rafa, but I think in both cases the fat lady is definitely singing. I think Rafa will recover, for the most part, and remain an elite player for another year or two, but that cracks are showing. He can dominate the clay season but is questionable on grass and, presumably, hard courts.

Roger, however, looks close to done. Not "done, done" but no longer and elite player. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see him finish the year outside the top five. In the YTD rankings he's #5 and if Berdych wins two more matches will be #6. He could stick around for a couple more years and hang out in the #5-10 range, but I don't see him being in the top 3 again, barring injury from someone.

Hyperbolic? Well, this has been his worst spell of his career; if he was 27 or 28 I'd think he'll bounce-back but he's almost 32.

Watching Stak interview...such a nice dude too.

Stakhovsky is a very nice guy, well educated and spoken. Could have not happen to a nicer guy in fact.

Stakhovsky deserves a lot of credit for how he played. This wasn't vintage Federer, but still it wasn't a train wreck either. It's a little silly to cite Federer's age every time an individual plays him tough. It goes without saying, a more youthful Federer in his prime would be more difficult to beat. Roger may have missed some BP opportunities, but if memory serves, Stak spoiled his share early on as well.

Fed's got plenty of game left in him. No need to shovel the dirt over him just yet.

Yeah, I agree with Kieran as well. On one hand I'm disappointed that Roger is out, but on the other I like the thought that anything can happen, that the Big Four logjam is starting to break up a bit.

That said, I don't relish the thought of another Djokovic-Murray snoozer for the final.

Rosol effect. Enter in the court thinking you can win it. Also, even better, all the world watching you playing a legend in his backyard, you have nothing to lose, just go for it.

Well said buddy. Tennis has needed a bit more parity. Glad to see S&V isn't extinct. Even the great Fed was chipping & charging. A revelation and possible revisitation to older times perhaps? I hope!
