Great...I see Sam has drawn Lucie again....
Sam has never had great success with left handers.

Stosur has been struggling since she broke up with her coach and seems her muscles get in the way...

In regards to Eugenie, let's remind ourselves how far she has come in the past 12 months! Only won the Wimby juniors last year and now we are projecting such huge potential for her. She is just 19 and I for one, like all Canadians want her to accelerate that developing talent as fast as possible! However, let's not rush it too quickly. SI did a great interview on her and Eugenie again showed what poise she has on and off the court, and that bubbly glowing character and infectious smile, that has captivated most of us. So, to sum up this long dissertation, if she does get by Magdalena, the Sloane matchup will be one I will key on for sure. ;)

On a court towards the middle of the practice grounds, No. 2 ranked Victoria Azarenka looked determined but relaxed as she sparred with No. 70 Caroline Garcia. Dressed in a T-shirt that read "Your pace or mine?" Azarenka showed no signs of the illness that plagued her in Tokyo, working all angles of the court with precise and powerful shots. Azarenka noted that she was feeling better after falling to Venus Williams in straight sets at the Toray Pan Pacific Open earlier in the week.

Azarenka was moving quickly and laughing during a ball drill near the fan section. A chorus of "Vika!" shouts rained over the area as Azarenka walked over to sign autographs, leaving a large group of fans in a jovial mood.

To the left was a different sight, as No. 1 ranked Serena Williams worked through a training session in front of a big group of spectators. Williams, who is already guaranteed to finish the WTA season at the top spot for the third time in her career, looked stern and focused as she practiced on Saturday. The 32-year-old went through drills in silence for most of the session, a lone wolf both in the rankings and within her training regimen.

And she defends her Osaka title next week. She keeps starting these matches well, but losing them in 3 sets in the end, probably not fully recovered.

Madison beating Dominika is not all that surprising, Cibulkova is a hit or miss player.

And, Andrea vs Vika, not very interesting in my book. Two different leagues.

One thing I have noticed this year is Serena is very hit or miss in her court positioning. She better step in a bit more closer to that baseline. She is missing a lot at net because she has to take more steps to get to net because she is 3-5 feet behind the baseline. Azarenka used the drop shot well against Serena in the US Open, and I think a lot of players are seeing that now that Serena is a bit further behind the baseline net play can be an effective play if used wisely.

Remind me, how many tournament has Serena won this year playing that way?

Also, one effective match against Serena using the dropper does not constitute a need in change. Remember, Serena won that match, it was a windy day.

Where did I say Serena wasn't winning? I said it was hit or miss her court positioning. I just said it is an effective tactic to use against her because she is so far behind the baseline. It is probably a good reason why she gets pushed to 3 sets sometimes against Azarenka and others rather than a straight set affair because of sloppy court positioning. I used the Azarenka match as an example as it was the most obvious and recent example.

That's not why she gets to three sets with Vika, it was a once off match, primarily due to the wind. I mean reference another match with Vika where that tactic was evident. Also, she's played what, 8 three setter all year? Sorry, her court positioning has not been the cause of loses this year. And, in order for other players to implore the dropper tactic, they have to be able to actually hit an effective dropper off the weight of Serena's groundies, and unlike Vika many don't have the footwork and speed to take advantage

Petko is still attempting to get back to her old form without much success, Vika was not her old self during her last match, those aspects makes it interesting to me.

Hmm, ones last match she was below par due to sick/under the weather, and the other was injured and out for months, but was never in the league of the other before the injury.

Nah, not interesting, to me.
