Wow, those are horrible numbers for both ladies. 51 unforced errors from Sloane. Yikes!
Sloane is overhyped...she is boring to watch and always looks defeated.

Good win for Caroline, but, weren't at this same juncture stating it bold well for the next last year around this time when she made a final or two, and again when she made the final of Indian Wells in March?

You have to keep it relative, Caro is playing better than she has done for most of the season, but she's still some way from the top of the game where she once sat. Last week she still ultimately lost to Kerber, who has hardly been setting the world alight this season either. In these events, the players shining are mainly players who have struggled this season thus are well rested, have a lot left in the tank and have lots of motivation with Istanbul in mind. Even Serena looks well below her best and vulnerable here.

Caro plays one more tournament before Istanbul. Sloane plays two more. I think it is theoretically possible for her to qualify.

She doesn't need to overtake Caro though. She needs to overtake Kerber and Jankovic. It's highly unlikely. If Kerber wins tomorrow, Stephens can no longer qualify unless someone withdraws. If Jankovic wins tomorrow, Stephens has to win both Linz and Luxembourg and hope Jankovic doesn't gain any more points this season. Given Jankovic plays Osaka and Moscow, that is extremely unlikely.

Imo if Serena beats Wozniacki tomorrow the race is down to a straight shoot out between Kerber and Jankovic for the 8th spot, and both will qualify if someone withdraws.

I am wondering what's wrong with Serena.

She is having close matches and tough going

against players She usually beats easily.

There was a report She left the practice court

crying a few days ago.

Wonder if somethings wrong?

Serena always looked ready to get out of town..she never looks happy in China even during the Olympics in 08.

I think Serena is on empty period. She usually gets that way after all the big hardware has been claimed. I don't think she wanted to take the penalty for missing it regardless of being ahead in the ranking and what not. I am glad she didn't go to Tokyo. I can't imagine what type of emotions we would be seeing at this point if she had gone there too.

Well I watched the entire MK, Serena match last night, and Serena was quite lucky to take out Maria. Maria had three match points in the first set and blew it. Serena kept tugging at her left thigh or side of her back, but she looked completely disinterested in the match. Again, in the second set Maria served well, and as in the first set was broken in the 12th game to lose both sets, 7-5, 7-5. Maria played what I think was her best game in months, probably since I saw her in England, but in Serena fashion she managed to find a way to win, but just barely. She remained stoic throughout the entire match.

Williams had beaten Kirilenko in all seven previous meetings, and by 62 60 and 63 61 scorelines in their two previous meetings this year. -
But this time it was as close as could be, with Kirilenko having big chances in both sets. -

61 64 for Serena. Caroline had a good second set - looked like she had too big respect for Serena until 40 in second set, where she actually played a lot like the two first matches in Beijing. Today she's not there in the first 1½ set and you can't do that when you play Serena - congrats to Serena for her 71st win this year - bravo :) Caroline is back on level and will have a good 2014.

Good to see:

Sad to see Li lose. I get the sense that Petra has come to terms with her game. She has accepted the fact that her game goes off during matches but not long enough to cause losses. This realization has brought calmness and confidence. If I am right, she is finally ready to take her rightful place as the world number two.

Happy to see JJ win. Rooting for Aga as well.

Aga and Angie going at it in the last QF. Aga had a 5-1 lead in the opening set, only to end up winning the set in a breaker after saving a handful of SP's for Angie. A-Rad w/ an early break in the 2nd 5-1

Chinese fans acted unclassy in Beijing. They kept cheering during the points and in the end they only hurt themselves as Li could not even concentrate w/ all the hullabaloo. I remember them doing the same thing at the Olympic games in 2008.
