Venus' First Match Was 21 Years Ago (WTA homepage)

Venus Williams made her professional tennis debut on October 31, 1994 - and it was a winning one.

14 when she took to the court for her first round match at the Bank Of The West Classic, which was held in Oakland, California back then. An unranked wildcard into the draw, Williams beat No.58-ranked countrywoman Shaun Stafford in that match, 6-3, 6-4

Congrats to this fine player :clap

Saw an interesting poll on Twitter.

Which career is the better one: Caroline Wozniacki or Agnieszka Radwanska? I'll admit I could go either way on this one.

Caroline s career is more impressive...she has more titles weeks at no.1 ...2 slam finals year end no.1 .Aga won the YEC by default..Aga has losing records against a lot of top ten players...Caro has managed to beat players like Serena and pova at slams...Aga s season started in June so she was the fresher of the bunch at the YEC...not because that she was better

I'll agree with most of what you said but Aga did not win the title by default. All of her matches were close and the way she played against Sharapova and Kvitova was very enjoyable to watch. I was rooting for Kvitova but have to say she completely deserved her title.

Weird...Why did Stanford used used to be held in late October? Was it not part of the main tour?

It was an indoor event back then, and like today much is decided by the sponsor. You can see the whole schedule if you follow this link:

In fact they had a longer tour back then but the play was not so forcefull.

Seems they go to DUbai - here is another player - I think you know her. They have been to a Katy Perry concert - looks relaxed and cosy.

Because it's hot. It's 7PM right now and it's 84. Plus I believe there's duty free shopping too.

Forceful as in hard on the body or forceful as in mandatory tournaments?

That's been a bit of a joke going way back! :lolz: She set a trend while the Williams were busy doing other things; the WTA being all at sea when Henin retired as well! You had a succession of players becoming #1 and #2 in the world barely getting to a major final; just consistency the term best identifying this hilarious period in women's tennis! Woz held the #1 ranking for well over a year with additions of Safina, Jankovic, and Azarenka all holding the top spot for a minute with no major at the time IIRC! :nono  :dodgy: :cover

Well maybe I chose the wrong word but since Venus started: racquets are better, they serve harder, more hardcourts with a chance of injuries, competion harder, harder to the body - you may continue the list.

I wasn't disagreeing with you I was just trying to understand if you were talking about the WTA placing penalty and pressure on players to play a certain number of tournaments every year or if you were referring to the generally accepted idea that each decade tennis has become more and more hard on the body for both men and women players.

Every time rules are changed to improve the game, players feel they have to go that extra mile to circumvent the action and give them an advantage! This is all about stupidity and competitiveness of the pros; not the sport! No one commands them to battle one another to the death; think '12 AO! They are pushing themselves more and more every few years and it all has to do with choice! Pros complain about how long the season is, but in their spare time they're playing WTT, Asian WTT, exhibitions, and charitable events! They say they want rest, but few actually seem to do it when they have the chance! Idiots! :cover :nono  :cry
