Her year may have been full of surprises at times, but as a whole nobody played better in 2014-Serena Williams is officially the WTA Year-End No 1.
There were struggles-early defeats at the first three majors, some injury and illness trouble sprinkled here and there-but Williams overcame them all and brought her legendary skills when it was crunch time this year. She captured seven WTA titles-nobody else won more than four-and among those titles were an historic 18th Grand Slam title at the US Open, not even dropping a set the entire two weeks, and the BNP Paribas WTA Finals.Singapore presented by SC Global title just over a week ago, completing a three-peat at the season ender. Her five other titles came at Premier level events.
And now she's the year No 1 for a fourth time, having previously done it in 2002,2009 and 2013.Nobody has had that long a span-12 years-between finishing No 1 Steffi Graf is next with nine years, her first year-end World No 1 finish in 1987 and the last one coming in 1996.
"Its pretty awesome," Williams said."I never, never thought I would be playing this long.Or if I were playing this long,I figured I'd be playing doubles.Definately not being No 1 in singles."Gosh,I work so hard on my craft at what I do,though. There isnt a day that goes by that I dont think about being the best. Its so stressful. The only time I didnt think about it was when I had some problems and I was in hosptial. That was a relief, almost,I wasnt thinking about it."
Williams believes the longevity boils down to one thing.
"I think it just really boils down to your personality" the world No 1 explained."My personality is I'm a fighter,as you can see,and I never give up.I work very hard for everything.Whether its my serve or return,I work hard for everything. And its good to see some of the results from that.I think it is a good example for a lot of other people who are playing tennis or going to school who want to do something. You have to work hard at it.Nothing is coming for free.At least not for me."
"From what I understand from other people,if dosent come free for them either".
And she's already thinking about 2015.
"I was the best I could be this year for me,and I'm so looking forward to next year"Williams said.
"I cant wait to get started again".
