Her year may have been full of surprises at times, but as a whole nobody played better in 2014-Serena Williams is officially the WTA Year-End No 1.

There were struggles-early defeats at the first three majors, some injury and illness trouble sprinkled here and there-but Williams overcame them all and brought her legendary skills when it was crunch time this year. She captured seven WTA titles-nobody else won more than four-and among those titles were an historic 18th Grand Slam title at the US Open, not even dropping a set the entire two weeks, and the BNP Paribas WTA Finals.Singapore presented by SC Global title just over a week ago, completing a three-peat at the season ender. Her five other titles came at Premier level events.

And now she's the year No 1 for a fourth time, having previously done it in 2002,2009 and 2013.Nobody has had that long a span-12 years-between finishing No 1 Steffi Graf is next with nine years, her first year-end World No 1 finish in 1987 and the last one coming in 1996.

"Its pretty awesome," Williams said."I never, never thought I would be playing this long.Or if I were playing this long,I figured I'd be playing doubles.Definately not being No 1 in singles."Gosh,I work so hard on my craft at what I do,though. There isnt a day that goes by that I dont think about being the best. Its so stressful. The only time I didnt think about it was when I had some problems and I was in hosptial. That was a relief, almost,I wasnt thinking about it."

Williams believes the longevity boils down to one thing.

"I think it just really boils down to your personality" the world No 1 explained."My personality is I'm a fighter,as you can see,and I never give up.I work very hard for everything.Whether its my serve or return,I work hard for everything. And its good to see some of the results from that.I think it is a good example for a lot of other people who are playing tennis or going to school who want to do something. You have to work hard at it.Nothing is coming for free.At least not for me."

"From what I understand from other people,if dosent come free for them either".

And she's already thinking about 2015.

"I was the best I could be this year for me,and I'm so looking forward to next year"Williams said.

"I cant wait to get started again".

Report from the WTA website November 3rd.

Thats a pretty good summation of her year. I really like the end. I think since her heart problems a few years ago Serena has really had fun playing tennis like it's 1999 again. I love that.

Serena did not have heart problems.

I think it was a lung problem if my memory is correct, just got a memory jolt

She had a pulmonary embolism that travelled to her lungs and if she had not gone to the hospital when she did she would have died. It all started from that cut she got in Germany and she was in a boot for almost a year. After she took the boot off she flew to LA and that was the worse thing she could have done because that made things worse. During the course of taking injection of blood thinners because of the pulmonary embolism, during that time missed and stuck a vein (or something like that) and developed a hematoma and she had to be in the hospital to have it drained. She also had a stint in her groin to prevent the clots from travelling---like a drainage...or something like that. I am telling you that girl was seriously, seriously sick and close to death. That is why after she came back and won that first match at Wimbledon she started to cry because she knew she was a min. from leaving this earth. Never forget that day she won that match and started to cry, because I cried also. It was so sad.

One of the many reasons that I admire Serena Williams is that 'she never takes anything for granted',she continually works hard to improve her game at every level.Lets face it as tennis fans we are blessed that she still loves the game, has the passion, loves the challenges and loves to compete at such a high level. It will be a sad day in tennis, when Serena decides to hang up her racquet. In the meantime I will just sit back and marvel at one of The Greatest Athletes to ever pick up a tennis racquet.

....

What do you mean end the 2014 thread?
We still have more than a month left...

We don't want 2014 news mixed up with 2015

I was in New York that day, too late to see Caro finish but I saw some of the runners cross central park, late in the afternoon at 4 pm they were still running, some were walking. :snigger

I took a couple of pictures, I'll post them later.

I love Serena but her sightings with Caro are now a bit annoying....I think its time to go on a solo off season holiday or with her sisters leave Caro with her family.
This is a good time to reconnect with say Common or some young hot athelete...just saying

Leave the girl alone and let her hang out with whom ever she wants to hang out with.

have no idea what you are talking about. Just because you think whomever you are referring to looks like her father that may not be the same for me. I know two people in that picture and I am sure you know which two I am referring too. The other two women I have no idea who they are.

I didn't know, either, until fashionista pointed it out. That's when I realized she did look a little like her father. My post had nothing to do with you.

Oh! that's how I read it. If she's a designer - Wow she look like she got her outfit from Tarja..and the shoes....:puzzled The entire outfit is a mess.

Oudin to have heart procedure, eye surgery. Report from AP. 5th November.

American tennis pro Melanie Oudin says she will have a procedure Thursday for a heart condition, then surgery later this month for an eye problem.

"I dont think my luck could get any worse.I just can't wait for 2014 to be over",the 2009 U.S.Open quarterfinalist said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press on Wednesday."A heart thing this week, and then an eye thing after that.I have lots going on".

The 23 year old Oudin said that for more than a year, she has been experiencing occasional "episodes" of an accelerated heart beat, usually during-or right after-matches.

"I was convinced it was some sort of anxiety,"she said."Its been really frustrating.I played through matches having it,because I never really knew what it was.I would try and relax and take some deep breaths and let my body relax, and then I felt better. It sounds like an anxiety attack".

Oudin said she went for a medical check last year on her heart, but "everything came back completely normal, and I had every test in the book".

Later in 2013,Oudin was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis (rab-doe-my-OL-uh-sis),a muscle-damaging condition which may be caused by intense extertion. She was told by doctors there is no connection between the condition and her accelerated heartbeat, which she said was diagnosed last month as a form of arrhythmia known as artrioventricular nodel reentrant tachycardia.

Oudin has been ranked as high as 31st and is currently ranked 165th and looking for a new coach after ending her work with the U.S.Tennis Association.

In September 2009,at age 17,she followed up a run to Wimbledon's fourth round with an attention-grabbing series of surprising victories, including against Maria Sharapova,to get to the quarterfinals of the U.S.Open.

Oudin, who is from Marietta,Georgia, will have Thursday's procedure in Atlanta and, while saying "it's not open-heart surgery," she added,"Because it's my first surgery ever, and something to do with my heart,it's a little scary".We are hoping that after I have this, hopefully I'll never, every have to deal with it again," Oudin said.

"I'll never have to deal with it during matches;it's been in my head.I feel terrible when it happens and I'm trying to play".

Next will be the operation for what she called "a growth in my eye from the sun, being out in the sun so much".

Oudin expects to be able to return to the court within a few weeks.

"I'm not going to start training,"she said,"until I feel 100 percent".
