Reader's problem

Reading too much can cause eye-strain, itching, stinging & burning eyes.

the battery doesn't last 1/2 as long as it says on the box

I have a Kobo and its battery lasts very long. If we're talking about proper e-readers (with electronic ink instead of usual LCD screens) it really should consume much less battery (in fact, the batteries are the usual ones, they last more due to low consumption). Maybe you're using too much brightness or too much of its external light (depending on the model). If you use none or minimal of those resources (by reading at daylight or using ambient light), battery should last what they are supposed to last. Or else, maybe you have some one line service turned on, which could be consuming battery too.

I had a Kobo. It only lasted me a day before I had to recharge. The screen was very bright though so maybe that was the reason. Thank you very much.

Just a spontaneous idea that popped through my head. It's very nice, calm & serene. I don't think anything will come of this though & the song is more like a sonnet with a unique rhyme scheme (not a Shakespearean sonnet) than a song.

There once was a land full of all the horses you could imagine. Over this land ruled Odin who had a horse with 8 legs called the Sleipnir because it was a Viking land so had to be ruled by the main God of the Vikings. He was the King of all the horses. Pegasus lived there as he veered off course when stretching his wings from Greece & got lost with all the unicorns & horses & ponies of all different breeds & colours. There were appaloosas & palominos as well as Irish draughts, Connemara ponies, Shetland ponies, Shire horses & Clydesdales. This land had mountainous regions & Lake districts, woodlands & coastal areas. The rivers, lakes & oceans in this land were scrupulously clean. In this land everyone got on with each other & worked together as a team. There was always peace in this land. There were lots of dogs & birds in this land. The King of all birds was the owl because he was so wise all the birds listened to him & took his advice. There were a lot of other animals in this land too though. Everybody sung all the time in this land & everyone could have a laugh & joke with each other as well as have interesting conversations. They lived in stone houses with huge back gardens where they could grow fruit, vegetables & flowers as well as play tennis & feed the birds who sung to them in the most melodious & harmonious voices imaginable. People in this land especially loved equestrian & racquet sports so loved playing tennis. There was a choir in this land who were exceptional. Everyone loved listening to them singing. They sung as often as they had a chance to. There were good song-writers in this land too. This is an example of 1 of their songs:-

We wake up in the morning & do what we have to do.
Nothing is ever too much because we work together with you.
We even eat the finest food.
That's good enough for all our brood.

We always manage to have a lot of fun.
We all like the odd pun.
We like alliteration & spoonerisms as well.
We sing along to the campanologists ringing the bells.

We love all our animals great & small.
Horses though are the best of all.
They do a lot of work.
They're very hard-working & never shirk.

Everyone always has a good day & night too.
This makes it easy for them to sleep the whole night through.

They had very good Dr's there & nobody ever got very ill. They were all cured by the Dr's pill.

In this land lived a lovely, young lady called Cordelia Jane. She had the loveliest curly, copper hair that flowed all the way down her back & her eyes were of the brightest blue & looked like the sea on a nice, summer day when the sun is shining bright above. She met a man called Mark Antony & they fell in love at 1st sight. He had the nicest voice you could imagine & was extremely clever not unlike Cordelia Jane. He was as strong as an ox & always there to support her. They went out to dances & had some fun. They enjoyed concerts too. 1 day they decided to get married. She got married in a gold, glittery dress that shone like the sun. He wore a red tartan suit. They went on honeymoon to a land full of horses where all the beaches were as white as snow & the sea was transparent. You could see the fish swimming over your feet. Not long afterwards Cordelia Jane became pregnant. She gave birth to a daughter called Amelia Ann.

Apparently, it's the shortest day of the year today, so Carpe diem because "tempus fugit" (English translation = time flies).

How can extremely grandiloquent, articulate & loquacious people be so misunderstood?
Why do things always go wrong even when they're good?
Why can highly intelligent people sometimes find it hard to say the simplest things?
Do other people know the embarrassment this brings?
How come some people who are nervous say more rather than less?
Why can some feelings be very hard to express?
Why are people so quick to judge people whose circumstances they don't know?
Why are we sometimes our worst foe?
Or rather sometimes our worst enemy is inside our own head.
Why can it be so hard to put bad memories & ideas to bed?
How come sometimes we think less of ourselves than other people do?hey
How come sometimes it takes other people to bring out the real you?
How come some people come out as arrogant when they're not?
They're really quite unsure of themselves & can come across as unconfident the next shot.
They've got a conscience & know the difference between right & wrong.
They try their best to always do the right thing & stay strong.
How come, no matter how people try to do the right thing they can't win?
No matter how hard they try they always sin.
Why is it so hard to forget things?
Do other people realise the sorrow this brings?
Good memories though they can be a blessing can also be a curse.
Maybe you remember all the useful, nice & important things but you always remember those worse.
Sometimes understanding what's going on is hard & "ignorance is bliss".
Sometimes you realise some people would love your abilities & feel ungrateful for thinking like this.
Sometimes we need to forgive & love ourselves as well as others.
Sometimes we don't feel like lifting our heads from under the covers.
How come some people can't do average, they go from being very bright to being very dumb?
How come for some people, practicality just doesn't come?

I'm very sorry for how the above poem may have come across. I wrote it spontaneously because that's how I felt at the time & how I feel sometimes. I'm always either over-estimated or under-estimated.

I went to Leeds today. There was a piper in the town centre. I loved it as bagpipes are my favourite musical instrument.

No wonder a lot of people are passive or smarmy today. There are a lot of people who are nasty because other people have different opinions to them & always have to be right whether other people explain why they think the way they do or not. We all have our different life experiences depending on where we live & how we were taught & trained. These experiences shape our opinions.

This year, I've been mainly reading about the flora & fauna of the British Isles though I have re-read the works of Jane Austen, reminded myself about & learnt more about British history & read some other works of fiction mainly by Dickens. Some information I picked up about British history I've put into 1 of my on-going pieces. I've also learnt how to make jam & jam jar lids as well as other old arts & crafts. I started a herbarium which has got a buttercup, daisy & dandelion in so far.

Happy New Year! I couldn't let it go without sharing my favourite version of Robert Burns song. I love the sound of bagpipes. They're my favourite instrument. I hope you enjoy.

Song words

Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot & never brought tae mind.
Should Auld Acquaintance be forgot & the days of Auld Lang Syne.
For Auld Lang Syne my dear.
For Auld Lang Syne.
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet for the days of Auld Lang Syne.

I try my best to inspire
people to go for their heart's desire.
You can do almost anything you want to do.
If you try, in the end most things will come to you.
Sometimes you need a good teacher/tutor/trainer/ instructor to teach/train you.
Sometimes self-education will do.

Is anyone doing any of these reading challenges this year? I've never done 1 before but the reading group I'm in on facebook decided to do 1 to give us more choice than a book group. I never joined a book group in case I didn't like the book set.
