Great match! It has to be disheartening to play Serena thinking you have her, and then you are shaking her hand and going home.
come on Sunday, you and others had Serena out of the tournament and the match was not even over yet.

And, I am not saying that I didn't pencil Serena out of it. I am tired of these BS matches from her. She needs to come with it start to finish I understand against say Venus or Azarenka, but against the Friedsams and Watsons of the world, no.

The problem is only against weaklings, you take things easy and give up a set before realizing, it is time to get to work.

The problem is she paces herself. Why play top 10 tennis against a Friedsam or Watson when your "C" level will do? Like Sunday said, everyone is gunning for Serena and why shouldn't they? She's the #1 and what player doesn't want to be where she is? Since it's apparent she's going to get tight chasing history, she has to come out the gates ready for whoever she's playing, top 10 or not because that target on her back isn't getting any smaller.

just heard on tv that Watson had a team of former players giving her tips and tactics on yesterday match and they were using the Cornet match as a model...the former players are Rudzeski Murray Tim Henman and Wade....so Serena mentally outplayed these experts...at the end of the day the mind overrides all tactics..lol..cant teach mental strength.

At some point in the third set, Serena got irritated that fans are shouting during the point and asked the umpire to instruct the fans not to do so. The umpire did so and after than fans behaved.
I don't think the crowd did it intentionally either. They got carried rooting for their girl. Wimbledon crowd is usually knowledgeable and decent crowd.

Wonder who they would have rooted for had she (Heather) been playing Robson.

In that situation, they would have rooted for Robson. Robson is the golden child over there and they worship her.

Exactly, I can understand nerves and losing a game or two, but losing it for essentially an entire sets worth of games not really. It just amazes me how quickly she makes the change whether for better or worse. I get that she probably is trying to conserve energy, but playing a match well from start to finish rather than coasting and hoping your C game will get you through then realizing you have to raise it to get the win would be better in the conservation department.

I mean who doesn't want a shot at taking out a #1, 20 slams and counting champion. She always talks about how everyone wants a piece of her, so I don't understand the intense lulls or the slow starts.

Hi Tossip and All

,I didn't see the match, going thru my annual Rafa mourning period. I am just watching the hghlights of the Serena\Heather match. it appears that Heather played a great match and it wasn't a funky slow start by Serena. Serena seemed to be moving well but this girl came to play.

Btw. great point bout all the experts helping Heather(are any of them available to offer assistance to my dawg, Rafa:blush:

do these people hate Serena this much...wow

They like Serena. They love Heather. Always a fair crowd here
no we saw the glee and anticipation of a upset of a player they dislike....I saw an old guy red in the face and forming at the mouth with glee..unbelievable:snicker
I like Heather and she has earned her stripes today:claphope she capitalizes on this experience.
Man.. Heather made Serena work harder than I have seen probably since Vika..I agree. I hope Heather realizes that if she can play like this, she can be in the top 20.. She played excellent from only watching the highlights.

Serena played a good first set..trouble started in the second set when she was making errors and not moving her feet. The crowd got louder and louder and it seemed to distract her...she lost the set and then third set Heather had the fans cheering loudly ...she was playing great and went 3-0 up almost 4-0 ..Serena broke back and recovered enough to even out the score to 4-4...Heather broke to serve for the match and Serena broke back to 5-5..she held serve and then broke Heather for the match....same like what she did to Azarenka 2012 USA Open final..

Watson is a counterpuncher just like JJ...she played wonderful tennis but blinked in those last moments ....hopefully the brits will give her endorsements just like they did to Robson ...who has been absent for almost 2yrs.Heather has been flying the british wta flag all by herself ...she deserves recognition for her efforts.I hope she uses this as a yardstick for her career...
