No way can you eliminate grass. It's already a short season as it is. Only 4 weeks out of the year. This is the first year I remember it being this bad. There must be something they are doing to the grass this year. I also remember a few people slipping and sliding during the early days of the Olympics last year. I think that had more to do w/ the quick turnaround of the grass from the end of Wimby.
I think the problem is not the grass, it was the weather while the grass was growing. One of the commentators mentioned that it was very rainy while the courts were being "grown" and as a result the roots did not set properly. I am not a grass expert, but it sounds plausible.

Completely missed Sloane's match with Petkovic. Petkovic showed that she's still got it and can definitely get back to the top 10. But Sloane pulled it out. Which shows some mental fortitude or will power or whatever. Proud of her. And SAY WHAT! I just went to check where Sloane lost at Wimbledon last year. I go to the WTA site and see Sharapova lost. Completely missed that! I was out of commission for a few hours today. Holy crap! WHAT is going on today? Injury withdrawals and retirements. Fed down. Maria down. This is insane. Fed's been struggling all year, so while I'm surprised he lost this early, I didn't expect him to win the title. I of course didn't expect Maria to win the title either because she's not getting past Serena. But... I didn't expect a second round loss. I guess Larcher de Brito screamed louder than Maria and Maria said, "Ok. I guess you win." This is insane. I mostly just can't believe I missed it. Wow. Wow. Wow.

HOWEVER... what that does is open up this quarter for Stephens! So... GO SLOANE! This half of the draw has been decimated with Maria and Vika out. I'm think I'm mostly disappointed that with Vika out Maria couldn't find a way to win because she knows it should be easier to get to the final.

Well, Kvitova probably would have lost today too if she hadn't gotten a walkover. She's now the only other Wimbledon champion in the draw besides Serena. Will she make the final? I doubt it. I mean I do hope she plays well and makes the semis where she loses to Stephens. But... I'm not sure she'll make the semis. I'm also not sure Sloane will make the semis.

Sloane lost in the 3rd round last year btw. So... she's defended her points at the very least. Now hopefully she can add to them.

If you want to know what happened to Maria, go back and read this thread. There were a couple of us commenting about the match as it unfolded.

Wow!! Today was a day full of surprises as well as the new generation showed their potential. - All sort of seeds were slaughtered in this round
First surprise, well not so much, was that Victoria Azarenka withdrew due to her knee injury
Then the youngster and #66 ranked Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) defeated the #12 Ana Ivanovic (SRB) 63, 63
Next was the #196 Petra Cetkovska (CZE) who defeated the #9 Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) 62, 62
Also Karin Knapp (ITA) defeated the #27 Lucie Safarova (CZE) 46, 64, 64 and Vesna Dolonc (SRB) defeated #16 Jelena Jankovic (SRB) 75, 62
Did anyone see Camila Giorgi (ITA) who defeated the #23 Sorana Cirstea (ROU) 76, 76? - What a cutie she is!! :)
On top of all that the youngster and #131 ranked Michelle Larcher De Brito defeated the #3 Maria Sharapova 63, 64 (ouch!!)

The other seeds on this half of the draw made it to R3
#8 Petra Kvitova (CZE) had an easy day since Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ) also withdrew
#17 Sloane Stephens (USA) defeated Andrea Petkovic (GER) 76, 62, 86
#15 Marion Bartoli (FRA) defeated Christina McHale (USA) 75, 64
#19 Carla Suarez Navarro (ESP) defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (CRO) 16, 63, 63

Another youngster Monica Puig (PUR) defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa (ESP) 62, 57, 64 and is also in R3

It's an exciting Wimbledon this year!

#2 Azarenka, #3 Sharapova, #9 Wozniacki, #12 Ivanovic, #16 Jankovic (to a fellow Serbian, the younger Dolonc), #22 Cirstea, #27 Safarova. All these women lost today. That's 7 of the 14 seeds that were to play today. Only 6 of the other 7 had to play. #8 Kvitova got a walkover. Add in the seeds who lost in the first round on Serena's side - #10 Kirilenko, #13 Petrova, #21 Pavlyuchenkova, #28 Paszek, #31 Oprandi - and you're missing 12 of your seeds. Add in #5 Errani and #26 Lepchenko who lost in the first round on Vika and Maria's side (no longer), and you're missing 14 of your seeds.
#1, #4, #6, #7, #8, #11, #14, #15, #17, #18, #19, #20, #23, #24, #25, #29, #30, #32 remain. So 5 of the top 10 are gone. 5 remain.

I'm pretty sure Sloane is the youngest seed remaining.
And most of the above damage was done by younger players.
Larcher de Brito (just turned 20 this year, though it seems she's been around for 4 years or so) over Sharapova.
Puig (just 19) over Errani.
Robson (just 19) over Kirilenko.
Bouchard (just 19) over Ivanovic.
Karolina Pliskova (one of the Pliskova twins, 21) over Petrova.
Dolonc over Jankovic. Dolonc is younger than Jankovic, but not much younger. She's already 24.
Giorgi (21) over Cirstea (only 23 herself).
Riske (22 going on 23 during this tournament) over Oprandi. But Oprandi retired in the third.

The young guns are rising up! Staging a revolution!
Some of the young players also made it to the second or third round but didn't play seeds. Like Annika Beck, who is 19. Or Madison Keys who is 18. She beat the young Heather Watson to get the second round. Petra Martic at 22 took out Tatishvili in the first round.
#30 Mona Barthel turns 23 on July 11th. Kvitova turned 23 in March. Cepelova, just turned 20 at the end of May beat the other Pliskova twin, Kristyna, who is 21. Torro-Flor who just turned 21 took down Begu who is about to turn 23. And Caroline Garcia, still just 19 took down Zheng Jie who took Serena to 9-7 in the third last year because she is a very good grass court player. For Garcia's reward she'll get to play Serena in the second round for the second slam in a row. She started to find some success against Serena in the second set at RG. On the faster surface can she find more success? I doubt it. Her serve should help her more here. But Serena's will too.... I'm sure there are more young gun matches that happened, but this is already pretty exhaustive.

Little fact I found out. Alison Riske and Pavlyuchenkova share a birthday. July 3rd. Born 1 year apart.

The other thing is, the top half of the draw hasn't even finished the third round yet!!!! After day 4, at the end of the third round, we could, and probably will, have even less seeds. The question is will it be just a couple of seeds who lose or will it be a bunch. Will we have 16 seeds in the fourth round (there are currently 18 seeds left)? Or will we have 12? Or 10?

Top half 3rd round matches to watch?
Martic v Karolina Pliskova.
Keys v #30 Barthel.
Cepelova v #11 Vinci.
Beck (born Fed 16, 1994) v #32 Zakopalova who turned 31 back in February (February 24, 1982). The super young verse the old. 12 years of difference.
Halep (just 21) v #6 Li Na.
Torro-Flor v #18 Cibulkova, who is not exactly old herself. She's only 24.

De Brito has always had potential, she beat Hingis when she was 14yrs old in Miami and played a good tournament in LA ..FORGOTTEN THE YEAR.I think what derailed her was the loud complaints about her grunting and she lost confidence..
Halep and de Brito have natural ability.
I wonder if de Brito will get endorsements for beating pova...a la Sloane

There's a whole thread dedicated to the young babes you all should use. It even has a poll attached and you can vote for who has the most potential.

I really don't think anyone can NOT blame the grass here. I mean the players are being pretty respectful and saying they were just outplayed, but it doesn't add up. I just somehow don't believe this many injuries and upsets happen. Something has to be done. I worry for the safety of the remaining players throughout the next rounds. I guess the courts naturally get less slick as they get worn down? I hope so, I would hate to see anymore falls.
