No vote for 20+

I'm glad you pointed that out. It's quite surprising.

It's only surprising in that it means that no deeply-committed Serena fan has pushed the button on that one. It seems that, for most of us, given her age, 18, maybe 19 would happen. Personally, though, I never count Serena out. She seems to tap into reserves of competitiveness and power that are just mostly above the rest, except, I would say Sharapova, on the competitiveness side. Both of those women live to win, and that's good for the sport.

20 is not entirely impossible, but you can't vote for something like that without taking away from the achievement if it actually would happen. To just casually say, "sure mate, she'll win twenty, no problem" makes winning slams sound like the easiest thing in the world.

Well I think the hardest part for Serena will be the pressure to get number 18 and then number 19. I think once she matches 18 she will relax a bit. I think the number she is definitely looking at now is passing 18. She does so much better when she takes it a match at a time. I think she will make her biggest push in Australia. I am hoping she defends the French. I would love another one on her resume. I think her biggest push will be at Wimbledon. I think she was pretty upset with herself for letting that one get away. I think realistically her biggest pushes and shots will be Australia and Wimbledon. I can see her definitely landing 2 slams next year with good health. She will have a shot at all 4. She has grown very strong on clay, so I am hoping for a defense in Paris. I can see her count at 19-20 next year with good health.

So, as of now (Nov.2013) Serena has 17, is coming off maybe her best ever year and I, for one, am looking forward to the 2014 season.
She will want to claim the AO early in the new year to draw level with Chrissie and Martina in the Slam count. Serena has suffered a couple of surprising defeats in Australia the last couple of years. I think this time she'll come out hungry and fully prepared. I see her winning two GS trophies at least in 2014 if she can stay clear of injuries. SW is 32 now, but unless age catches up with her, I see her winning 20 Grand Slam titles and maybe more.

Coming off the year she's had, and looking at the competition, 2 Majors next year is not out of the question. She seems impressively focused on finishing out her singles career in style.

It's all fun to say that, my sherona, as a fan, but what have you really got to back that up? We're trying to have an actual conversation here, not just field one-liner fannish-ness. What do you really think Maria is going to do in 2014 to turn the tide of losses against Serena? I'd like to hear. (And for the record, I'm a fan of both.)

I'd go even further than this and say something is going to have to go wrong for Serena to not win at least 2 grand slams next year. She's going to be favourite to win each grand slam barring a very rapid change of the wind. If she wins at least two grand slams next year, it becomes highly likely she will win at least 20 grand slams.

Unless you think her decline is imminently coming within the next year, to me it seems unlikely she won't win at least 20 grand slams.

It's kind of funny given her past woes there, but I kind of look at Roland Garros as maybe the easiest grand slam for Serena to win. The opposition on clay these days is so average, that Serena with her new impetus on clay seems unlikely to be beaten. I look at the last 3 Roland Garros champions, and I don't think any of them would cite clay as their favourite surface. And that's just it, hardly and of the top players excel on clay. The closest thing you have is Sara Errani, and her game is too ineffective vs the big hitters at the top of the game even on clay.

Women tennis is so unpredictable.. and thats why it fascinates me so much :)
For Serena to fail in 2014 only two things can happen:
1) She may lose interest and motivation.
2) Injuries.

If non of the two will happen, then Serena will have another happy year ;)

This is a valid question. Serena is #1, she won 2 slams last year. Earlier this year, before the AO, some Tennis pundits were even writing articles about her getting a Grand Slam.
She is considered by many the best player today, some even consider her the all time best!

So my question is will she get 18 slams to reach Martina and Chrissie?
May be even more? Like the 20+ slam bench-mark that very few have ever achieved.

Serena will get eighteen and pass Graf. Serena simply is a superior athlete and has become a student of the game (which allows her to change her game in the moment). Next years, she will get the AO, , the FO and probably Wimby. Not so sure she'll get the USO again.

it is written 2014 is Maria's 3rd Domination Era.

No the number she's probably looking at now is 18 because she has to get there before she can get to 19. She can't pass what she does not have.

Rugged,
18 is where Martina and Chrissie are.
Serena needs 6 more to pass Graf, Steffi is at 22
Then if Serena does that, she needs two more to pass Margaret Court for the top spot.

Rugged meant, she'll get 18, and she'll pass Graf, not that Graf is at 18.

Also, you totally forgot Helen Wills Moody at 19.
